Bootle Buck Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Apart from the Everton game last season I can't remember the last game when we could say he was outstanding. I guess he has had so many incredible games in his career that it's a little worrying that he just does not look like the Stevie of old. He just looks like he is lacking in confidence and seems to be pretty much to just be out there all over the place. He seems to have lost his shooting touch and his barnstorming runs are not really there anymore. Not sure if is due to him just regaining his full fitness and form, players around him or just the general funk of not winning. I am not having a go just missing seeing one of the best footballers in the world in his best form.
Maldini Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He was brilliant for England in the summer.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 he was very good for England in the summer - made the Euro team of the tournament didn't he? But on current form, he couldn't complain if dropped
Owen1978 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He's being asked to play a different type of game, patient passing which doesn't suit him at all.
honourablegeorge Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He's given the ball away 84 times this season, more than any other player.
Conrad Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He's past his absolute peak of course but he's still a fine footballer. And if he wasn't Gerrard he would be getting far more praise for his performances this season, but he's long been judged using different criteria to everyone else.
richwilks Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 (edited) And if he wasn't Gerrard he would be getting far more praise for his performances this season Not sure that's right. He's been average by Premier league football standards, he's been poor by his standards. He's done very little to get praised. He'll pick up though, he's a f***ing good footballer. Clay Davis Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He's still a great footballer but has struggled so far this season. He can wipe the beaming smile off his face after a s**** performance and all.
David Hodgson Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He's past his absolute peak of course but he's still a fine footballer. And if he wasn't Gerrard he would be getting far more praise for his performances this season, but he's long been judged using different criteria to everyone else. Absolutely. Gerrard is still class and relative perception is everything. People just can't get passed it.
Bootle Buck Posted September 17, 2012 Author Posted September 17, 2012 He's being asked to play a different type of game, patient passing which doesn't suit him at all. It seems under Rodgers style of play keeping the ball and accurate quick passing are a neccesary requirement. Gerrard and Suarez seem to be the biggest culprits for giving the ball away or trying to do a little too much. Worrying considering they are probably the best players we have.
surf Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He's given the ball away 84 times this season, more than any other player. i hope that includes the uefa games cause otherwise it's shocking
StevieC Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Been a while since he's hit a real screamer, let alone scored one. Do wonder if that groin saga has taken its toll.
chrisbonnie Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 he's 32, been injured for the best part of two years. And quite frankly, isnt what he used to be. thats being a little bit black and white, but its pretty much true. he's been woeful for us this season ,absolutely woeful. His reputation is keeping him in the team for now.
CarraLegend Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 he's been woeful for us this season ,absolutely woeful No, he hasnt. He wasn't woeful on the weekend and he certainly wasn't v Man City. Or v Hearts or v Gomel. He's not been near what he's capable of or was capable of but woeful nah though he wasnt good v West Brom or Arsenal.
Romario Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Slow start after a long layoff. I bet he's back to 90% of the old Gerrard soon which is still the best player on the park.Personally I think he needs to be playing in the center behind Borini with Luis and whoever either side. Leave central mid to Lucas Adams and co.
Swipe Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Be really disappointed in Rodgers if he resorts to playing Adam in CM. Or Adams.
Gerrardrules Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Gerrard requires freedom to roam just behind the strikers. He also misses a striker which is capable of using the space behind the defence of the opposition. He's missed Torres as much as Torres missed Gerrard.
Romario Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Be really disappointed in Rodgers if he resorts to playing Adam in CM. Or Adams.Ooops Allen. No idea why Adam popped in there.

Wunderbar Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Think he is waning. Still good but the signs are there. Don't think Shelvey or Henderson will fill in the void when he retires.
Mike Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 he's 32, been injured for the best part of two years. lfc003 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 He's given the ball away 84 times this season, more than any other player. After the 1st 3 games this season he had created 11 chances and was behind only Santi Cazorla for chances created in the league. The criticism of his performances has been way over the top. Stevie is armed with getting assists and making chance's for us which requires him to be alot more adventurist in his pass selection than our other centre mids so he's bound to lose the ball more.

kop205 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 I don't think we'll get another great season out of him, but reckon there could still be a few great moments, hopefully at opportune times. As for filling the void, nobody will. It has been said loads of times, we will need to head in a different direction rather than looking for anyone to fill his shoes. There isn't an individual out there good enough and almost zero chance of us producing someone of his quality to directly replace him in the next god knows how many years. Which doesn't mean that we won't end up a better team - not a dig at Gerrard by the way, just a reminder that even though he is irreplaceable as an individual, the total can still sometimes greater than the sum of the parts.
