I hated him so much the magnificent b*stard

Everton Academy coach Kevin Sheedy has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Sheedy, who was an integral part of the all-conquering Everton team of the mid-80s, will undergo surgery later this week.

The Blues legend will be away from Finch Farm for a period of time as he recovers from the operation.

The popular Irish international played 369 times for Everton, scoring 97 goals, and he is in good spirits as he faces up to his toughest opponent yet.

“It’s not ideal but I have to remain positive,” he said. “There is a history in the family.”

Kevin also urged anyone with any concerns for their own health to act quickly.

“It’s so important that people don’t ignore the early signs and symptoms and don’t be afraid to consult a GP,” he said. “After a period of rehabilitation I will return to my coaching role at Everton.”

The club has established an email address for supporters to send their messages to Kevin.

Email Sheeds@evertonfc.com and all messages will be passed to Kevin.

Oh no. get well Sheedy.

When we were kids the Evertonians would always be Sheedy and tried to shoot left footed. We were Rush, they were Sheedy.

Looks like good news for him. I'm sure you can never be too complacent with this, but delighted for him and best wishes to a continued recovery & recouperation.

Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Sheedy has been told his bowel cancer surgery has been successful.

A tumour and lymph glands that were removed during the surgery have subsequently tested ‘all clear’ which means that he will not require any further treatment.

He believes that early detection of the condition has saved his life.

Sheedy, coach of Everton’s Under-18 team, told their club website: "I will need regular checks to monitor my recovery.

"My life has been saved through early detection and I am told that over 90% who are diagnosed at the earliest stage are successfully treated.

"I would strongly urge anybody who has concerns to go immediately to their GP.

"Don’t be embarrassed to go otherwise you could die of that embarrassment."

Sheedy has thanked well-wishers following the diagnosis and said it helped his progress: "I would like to say a massive thank-you to everybody who sent me messages of support, which I got from all over the world.

"It was very touching and really helped me to deal with my situation knowing that so many people were rooting for me."

EVERTON legend Kevin Sheedy has described how the support of football fans in Merseyside and around the world helped him cope with cancer.

The 52-year-old, from Lydiate, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in July was speaking as he returned to Fazakerley hospital where he was successfully treated.

He went to thank surgeon Paul Skaife and his team and to back a national campaign raising awareness of the condition called Be Clear on Cancer.

In his first interview with the media since he had his life-saving operation in August Sheedy said the support of fans had been amazing.

He said: The amount of messages ... e mails from football and non footballing people, grandmothers who had bowel cancer 30 years ago and are still alive.... messages that were really rooting for you and to remain positive that was a massive, massive help.

Both Everton and Liverpool and football supporters across the world. There were too many messages to reply to. It was just amazing, the amount of people who were really rooting for me.
