Noise cancelling headphones

I walk to work along a very busy road and although i have a nice sounding pair of on the ear headphones its hard to hear over the racket from the traffic. Inevitably meaning i crank the volume up and f*** my ears.

 

So is this were noise cancelling headphones come in or is it all a bit of a gimmick?

 

Ideally don't want to spend more than about £50?
