Platini reckons euro 2020 could be played in many different countries as there are cheap airlines. What a tube, never mind the ecological damage, how feasable is it to ask supporters to embark on a european tour .

He has also come out against using technology. Do they try to come up with stupid things to say

He also totally ignores the fact that the "cheap" airlines have teams of people ready to increase the prices as soon as fixtures requiring overseas travel are announced. But I guess he lives in a different world to the rest of us

I'm not sure I'd be so quick to knock the idea. Sounds a little bizarre intially, but when you consider the miles covered during a tournament in Ukraine/Poland, or in a single country like USA, Russia, or even Brazil, then it could actually result in far less travelling. This assumes they regionalise the host stadiums, rather than having one group play in Glasgow/Moscow/Lisbon etc Also, by sticking to major cities, there will be a greater capacity and variety of transport available, and the same with hotel rooms. All in all, travel costs and distance could be greatly reduced if done smartly, certainly compared to a lot of previous/future tournaments.

If there are 6 groups there's not really enough games to have games played in 12/13 countries if you keep each group in a single country. Like the knockout will start at 16 rather than 8 so it's possible but then you're just looking to move most of the last 16 games and all of the rest through the bigger countries

Even if groups were to play in the same country the teams would have to be placed far enough apart to be able to host two games simultaneously. You'd need at least two cities per group so there'd be domestic travel then international travel for the knockout stages. It also means if you're finishing in a different position to qualify out of the group you could potentially be on different ends of the continent for the last 16 games.

It'd be nuts

Tariq Panja on Bloomberg made a good point on Twitter - 24 teams in Euros rules out a lot of eastern European countries from hosting, this brings them back into the equation and secures votes for the t***.

Platini even has that look about him, that desperate frantic greed. The way he's there with the medals and the trophies over emoting like a s*** actor. I despise the slippery t***.

Aye, he has got the look of someone who is thinking he knows more about football than everyone else and he still hasn't been given the rewards he deserves.

I presume they have already decided how 24 teams works.

So, how does it work?

6 groups of 4. Top 2 qualify. Then 4 groups of 3. Winners qualify for the semi finals. Then a final. Espana 82. Happy days.

is this confirmed now? Someone suggested it was 6 groups of 4 with 16 qualifying for the KO stages?

ah right was you not the one who described it earlier to me in this thread?

anyway can't remember much about 82, other than Brazil not winning it Maradonna's sending off and the final being f***ing great. Was the Sweden Brazil header that year?

ESPN said it was this format, top 2 in each group with the 4 best 3rd place finishers going into the last 16.

Platini wanted a swimsuit section for the final 4 places in the last 16, but was persuaded that this was not a godd idea.

I've no idea. That's just how they did it in 82

Best World Cup EVER!

By the following year it had changed to a KO last 16 from the same 24 group stage. Always struck me as nonsense that only a third of the teams go home after the group stages, and all but 2 of the 3rd placed teams got through. Much preferred the 2nd phase groups of 3.

When England and West Germany were put in the same phase 2 group with Spain it seemed they were happy with the 0-0 draw, both hoping they'd outscore the other vs Spain. You don't get that when two big teams are drawn together in a knockout. On the other hand, the Brazil, Argentina, Italy group was three great games so who knows.
