Dominus Maximus Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) Called up for England friendly. Congratulations are in order. Well done lad. And in front of Micah as well... My link England call for KellyLiverpool defender to provide cover for Norway friendly England coach Roy Hodgson has added Liverpool defender Martin Kelly to his squad for Saturday's friendly away to Norway. Hodgson, who was recently appointed as the long-term successor to Fabio Capello, named his 23-man squad for Euro 2012 last week. However, three of the seven out-and-out defenders selected in that squad have been given extra time off following Chelsea's UEFA Champions League win over Bayern Munich at the weekend. Former captain John Terry, Ashley Cole and Gary Cahill will not join up with the England squad until next Tuesday, leaving Hodgson short of options for the game in Oslo. To provide cover in his ranks, Hodgson has decided to turn to his old club Liverpool by drafting in Kelly for the match with the Norwegians. Kelly has made 12 appearances in the Premier League this season and has featured 47 times for Liverpool in all competitions since making his debut against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League in 2008. The 22-year-old has won six caps for the Under 21s, scoring three times and was also a member of England's squad at the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009. The Football Association has confirmed Kelly will return to Liverpool after the Norway fixture, with England then facing Belgium at Wembley on 2nd June. Edited May 22, 2012 by Jallow
Buzz Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Pleased for Kelly if he is happy with it, makes good sense too as he can cover for RB and CB.
muleskinner Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Pleased for Kelly, but you'd have to think Micah Richards must have upset some people in the FA to be continually overlooked.
épieur Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Pleased for Kelly, but you'd have to think Micah Richards must have upset some people in the FA to be continually overlooked. It is a bit weird. Pleased for Martin though. Hodgson is displaying a surprising fetish for Liverpool players since becoming England manager, it has to be said.

Buzz Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Ha yeah, said the same myself. Like he's trying to get back on our side.OR, ruin us before pretraning and the season starts
RazorUK Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Or trying to get on our good side before hodge the second comming happens after he is sacked from England on June 20th following his failure to get out of the group stages. He feels like he has unfinished business at Anfield!
growler Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Oh no. So not content with ruining Gerrard and glojo and telling dOwning he is world class he now wants to ruin our kids. Was hoping he'd be protected a little while longer. I suppose there is no danger of him going to the euros anyway about 10 years too young for him.
johngibo YPC Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Pleased for Kelly, but you'd have to think Micah Richards must have upset some people in the FA to be continually overlooked. I think it makes more sense to bring Kelly in for a one off game than Richards
muleskinner Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I think it makes more sense to bring Kelly in for a one off game than RichardsPossibly, Richards should be in the full squad, its daft that he isn't.
Davvo Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 You can see why Terry would need extended time off, after his exertions at the weekend.
épieur Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 (edited) I think it makes more sense to bring Kelly in for a one off game than Richards There's a pattern though. Johnson picked, doesn't even bother with the obvious backup in Richards. Need a rb for the next friendly? calls up Johnson's backup at his club. Henderson on standby. Doesn't even look at Carrick. Carroll fast-tracked into the squad ahead of Sturridge, Bent, Crouch and Holt. Downing picked ahead of... anyone. Gerrard as captain. He actually loves us. The demented owlfaced old lesbian. Davvo Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 He actually loves us. The demented owlfaced old lesbian. We're on his much coveted CV. No turning back now. He's the former manager of the 5 times European Champions, have some respect.
Molby Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 We're on his much coveted CV. No turning back now. He's the former manager of the 5 times European Champions, have some respect. the once and future king once he's proved everyone wrong by making the knockout stages of the Euros he can triumphantly return to fill the vacant manager's position he's ideal for the FSG vision in a way as he won't want any influence over club structure
Dominus Maximus Posted June 3, 2012 Author Posted June 3, 2012 s*** just got real. Martin is off to the Euros. Six Reds in the squad. Go England! Comment: I saw every Liverpool game this season. For most of the year we actually played brilliant football. Free flowing and chance creating. We had a terrible inability to score goals but, we played some of the best football in the country. If we had Wayne Rooney this season we would have locked 4th. I'm certain our six players will do good when called upon this summer.

Tommy Cockles Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 Good luck to the lad, great experience for him. Hope he gets some game time & does well.

Zoob Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 We did create a load of chances. Think we were 2nd or 3rd in terms of chances created. would have been higher had Suarez not missed 8 league games. Any way, chuffed for Kelly.
aka Dus Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 How many games did Kelly play for Hodgson at Liverpool?
charlie clown Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 There's not half some nonsense being spoken about Kelly's call up in the media. SSN (I know) have got it as Kelly vs Ferdinand issue, an eighth placed Liverpool being given preference vs. the top 7, yadda, yadda, yadda. There really are a bunch of twunts.
Swan Red Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 He's been ordinary and the FA are incompetent and there's no football for a week and they need copy
