Still utterly baffles me why Rafa wanted to replace him with Barry, absolute legend is Xabi.

same here. Will never understand that

Both Barry and Xabi have gone on to have good careers. This is the level of midfielders we need to be in for in the transfer market aren't they.

Last summers transfer window sends a chill through me, looking back is like waking up with a terrible hangover and slowly remembering where you where and what you said, throwing money around like it was going out of fashion.

I want us to look back on this summers transfer window with pride at a job well done. I'd rather have that than worry about players we don't have any more.

Xabi was very poor the season before, when Rafa tried to sell him and couldn't get 18mill for him,i think he got a jolt and in his last season he was fantastic,he should have been given a different jolt and a lot sooner but its history now,he's a class act though, good luck to him.

I remain convinced that the day Xabi did not travel for the Inter game is the day Rafa decided to get rid.

I'd look into Rafa's falling out with Pako there.

Both Xabi and him being Basques they were obviously mates.

I think the fact that Rafa had 'limited' funds played a big part. He wanted to sell Xabi and sign 2 players to improve the team.

Was still a huge mistake on his part but at least he signed him in the first place.

One of my biggest worries now is that we don't look like having the knowledge to sign top foreign players with potential for a good fee, the type of players we need to be successful again

Like that Suarez fella? And Coates hopefully.

He also paid 20 mill for Keane and was willing to pay 18 for Barry despite the 'limited funds' angle.

Was that during a game or training?

Don't think even the subs would be allowed phones during a game. Might have been before or after, think RM had a game on Sat

:D

Was wondering. I love his "game's on" look to mourinho!

We all know how this thread is gonna end up though don't we.

Regarding Suarez, didn't Rafa ask Kenny to scout him while he was in charge?

Coates, I think he'll be a star given the chance.

Whoever is in charge needs to work a miracle in the summer transfer market if we are to have any chance

I Miss Xabi

I don't know but it's evidence that we're not ignoring the foreign markets and can still compete for top talents if we want them enough. Few more Uruguayans would do me.

I hope you're right mate. Suso, if he stays and Sterling should also be given a chance

Wasn't it more to do with 'clash of personalities' rather than talent?

I think he genuinely wanted to go in a different direction and thought Barry would give us more attacking impetus from CM. Xabi hadn't been at his best the previous season but he was still a world class player. Just a bad call.

Rafa is a singled minded guy though and probably resented being overuled.
