Frosty Jack Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 What will be a 35 year old, 5th choice CB next season, on 90k a week, is ridiculous for a club in our position, no matter who he is.Would there be any qualms if he was sold in the summer?
Falconhoof Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Offer him a free transfer. He just wants to play football and would get a game in the championship or maybe at rangers. He won't move though, his contract binds him to the club now.
Davvo Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 We're saddled with that contract I'm afraid. Noone in their right mind would give Carra more than £30k per week out of their budget, so best we could do is save £1.5M per year for the final 2, by offloading him for free. Legend of a player for us, but if good judgement had prevailed, he'd have been gently eased out by now, just as many other legends have before him. The Purslow contract stinks to high f***ing heaven, definite payoff for services rendered.
Stevie H Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 he once said that when he was no longer first choice he'd leave to carry on playing football didn't he? guess 90k a week till you're 36 must change that.
Frosty Jack Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 Yeah, by sold I meant transfer, with or without a fee. I couldn't see us getting more than a token amount for him.Giving him a free to get his wages off the books will save us 9m. Has to be considered surely.
Ethan Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Those looking for Rafa back will see the end of Carra sharpish if it happens

I'm pretty sure we'd end up paying at least half of that contract anyway, probably more, free transfer or not. Still, I think I'd rather we paid him £2m or £3m per year to play for Bolton, than £4.5m to play for us, sadly. The thing is, I thought Kenny had made the tough decision earlier in the season, going with Skrtel/Agger. Going for Carra rather than Coates as cover, despite the evidence of performances, has been disappointing. I can understand the desire to have experience in there, rather than risk exposing a youngster to our poor form, but there's an argument that Coates would vastly improve us, and it's worth the risk, especially as he's an International.
Cooldude Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Been the end of the line for years He's done well for himself though, with the contract and the likes
Frosty Jack Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 He's certainly a hindrance to the integration of Coates, if he does have some kind of first team guarantee in the contract he needs to go.
Billy Dane Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Thanks for the memories, but time for him to go.
Stevie H Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Those looking for Rafa back will see the end of Carra sharpish if it happensi don't think that rafa benitez will manage liverpool again to be honest but a choice between him and carragher for the club's future is no choice at all.
lfc003 Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 (edited) People willing for him to be cast aside and sold are gonna be disappointed because he'll get the same club ambassadorial contract that Stevie got earlier this season to stay with the club long after he stop's playing. Those looking for Rafa back will see the end of Carra sharpish if it happens Carra was always undroppable under Rafa. Edited April 8, 2012 by lfc003
Epic Swindle Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Carra was always undroppable under Rafa. Whose fault was that?

Carra was always undroppable under Rafa. He'll be a good ambassador as long as he doesn't have to travel abroad where his wife might have to think of something to say in foreign.

Not bothered about that, though his ambassadorial credentials are questionable as TLM points out. It's the next 2 years i'm concerned about, the cost to the club and the team.
schmuckdonald Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 (edited) Can still do a job in the right system and if he's told to wind his neck in from time to time. EDIT: No one will eat his contract and he is within his rights to demand it be maintained. Edited April 8, 2012 by schmuckdonald

Frosty Jack Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 How will getting rid of a 1 year contract save us £9m? Thought he was contracted until he was 36?Either way 9/4.5m is a complete waste of money.
Flight Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Can still do a job in the right system and if he's told to wind his neck in from time to time. EDIT: No one will eat his contract and he is within his rights to demand it be maintained. No one can tell Carra to wind his neck in. He has an unhealthy drive to be in the starting eleven at CB (read his autobiography, see interview re new contract) even if it's not the best thing for the team. He's been here so long and is a local lad. Most important, he knows and is ingratiated with everyone in the club from top to bottom. This is why I've been saying for years he needs to part ways with the club not just stay whether playing or not.
épieur Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 I haven't been fond of Carragher's performances for over a year now, but I do think he is being somewhat unjustly vilified at the moment. He doesn't pick the teamsheet and there is no way in hell he has the clout to pressure the man of ultimate high standing at the club into playing him. I think he is finished to such a degree he is no longer worth playing, but it's kenny's decision to play him and I won't fault Carragher for going out there and trying to do his best, which I am sure he does. He's made no commotion about losing his first team spot either, despite all the dramatic anticipation about how Kenny would handle the transition and so forth. In the end, two defenders stepped in and were clearly better, it was a non-issue and Carragher made no issue of it either. Nor will I fault him for seeing out the end of a lucrative contract at the club he has played for all his life.
Epic Swindle Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Be a lot simpler if people just judged him as a footballer.
épieur Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 He has an unhealthy drive to be in the starting eleven at CB (read his autobiography, see interview re new contract) even if it's not the best thing for the team. There is no such thing as an unhealthy drive to be in the first team. If you get the opportunity to start, you go out there and do your best to prove you are worthy of it. You make it sound as if Carra should be telling the manager that he should pick someone else, which is b******s. He has made no fuzz about losing his place this season. I don't know what people want from him here.

He talks about things like knobbling players in training who are competing for his spot. Read his autobiography and make your own mind up. Then there's the time he refused to play at right back so Skrtel had to - Skrtel had a stinker and we lost three huge points (think it was 08/09 ??? I might be wrong on that).
