Two teams are truly exceptional, the rest are all of a good standard and can beat each other. Perfect storm. A lot of people swoon at Barca, but the different football of Madrid, more direct, is breathtaking.

But even in Spain they say "but would we win at Stoke on a wet Wednesday night?".

It truly is the international barometer for success. I believe Del Bosque said it after winning the World Cup.

They should scrap the Super Cup and just send the CL/Europa League winners to Stoke sometime in November and see which of them does least bad there to crown the winner.

Agreed. Ever since Ronaldo and Xabi went to Madrid, I've enjoyed watching them play more. Mourinho's taken them to a new level though. Their counter-attacking is something to behold. In many ways, it is a combination and extension of the Man Utd 07-09 and Liverpool 08-09 teams.

The serious gulf between top 2 and the rest. In everything - points, goals scored, etc.

two sides full of some of the very best players on the planet. how is it f***ed up? it's just cause and effect.

The World Cup should always be held in Stoke in winter and games should be postponed if the temperature rises above freezing.

It's also because, unusually, both sides have good management at the same time. Usually with this much money floating about you can depend on the manager to overstuff the team with the wrong type of players or to try to satisfy the egos of the most expensive signings by playing the wrong tactics or players around them.

Not happening in either team's case just yet.

Every team will be required to have a long throw expert and defenders that are at least 6' 4" tall.

Pulis needs to be at Barcelona; they'll win nothing with this namby-pamby, tipp-tappy, wussy football that Guardiola has them poncing about with. Keep football for men, not bloomin' ladyboys.

Read today that Barca and Spain have never lost a game in which Iniesta has scored.

Love that man.

His goal against Bilbao the other day was terrific. me and some friends got talking about the premise you're in Barcelona and you absolutely positively (for whatever reason) have to get a Barca shirt with a player's name on the back. Who do you get? Our thought process was that Messi is too obvious. He's the best player in the world, but it's the easy choice. You don't have to know anything about football to get his shirt. Iniesta on the other hand is a much smarter option. He's a brilliant player in his own right but by getting his shirt you also indicate you know a bit about the game as well.

Said before that if you take Messi out of the equation I think Iniesta might be the best player in the world.

Certainly top 3 anyway. He's magnificent. Read a great article about him last season. His teammates worship him.

Think placcy ronaldo is pretty nailed on as the runnerup.

I'd much rather watch Iniesta play though. He's magic.

Me too. Ronaldo is a machine but Iniesta is far more intelligent. There seems to be a level of thought to every move him and Xavi make.

slightly different players, but beyond that probably the thing that messi and ronaldo have most of all over iniesta is consistency of performance. he misses quite a lot of games, and has little slumps too. genius though.

i like xavi. unbelievable player. barcelona have had some incredible talent to call on when xavi hasn't been there this season, likes of thiago, fabregas, iniesta himself. none of them can run a midfield like xavi does. different level in that facet of the game, at least.

I'll have a look later mate. Might have been Sid Lowe. Think it was after one of Barca's dismantlings of the Mancs in the CL final. Was interesting to read how much everyone loves him in the squad. Guardiola seems to adore him. Think Xavi has even called him the best player in the world before. Before Messi went on this ridiculous run of form, albeit.

He seem a quiet and awkward fella off the pitch too. His nickname is glowworm or something.

Edit: here it is. It's actually from 2009! Before they spanked the Mancs in the final, when he was actually a doubt to play. He was majestic that night. At first i thought he was struggling with injury, but it then became clear he was dictatong the pace he wanted to and keeping the ball away from the Mancs with ridicuous ease. He's one of my favourite players to watch.

Xavi is incredible. Ferguson once made a good quote about how he's seen him lose the ball about five times in his career.

I still snigger at that daily mail caption of a few years ago. Clowns.

It's hilarious how bad football journalism is.
