Can US afford a war with Iran

Was at a coffee house earlier with a yank and his argument was we are a warrior nation which has f***ed everyone since 1st world war and every country which has come our way has been bumraped so screwing Iran over would be a piece of piss militarily. As a military there is no doubt US is has the most advance military in the world. However, a friend interjected regarding the economic reality which he dismissed out of hand that we are in better position that the UK and rest of Europe and our external debt is not more than 60%. Does economics really has a say over attack on Iran and is the bravado just a facade?
