"The players need to take responsibility for where we are in the league," Gerrard said.

"It's just not good enough for a club like us to be there. We have to find a better level of consistency.

"We need a reaction and there's no better team to produce that against than Everton.

"These are the games you always look forward to. It's a night match and there's going to be a fantastic atmosphere at Anfield.

"It's important the players put in a performance and get a result for the fans. Everyone is a bit down after recent results but we want to put a smile back on their faces.

"It's a big week and we want to go into that Cup tie with Stoke on the back of a win."

Gerrard admits the Reds were below par at Sunderland on Saturday as they succumbed to a second half strike from Niklas Bendtner.

Following on from an undeserved loss to Arsenal the previous week, the skipper admits it's a source of disappointment the squad haven't pushed on in the league since their Carling Cup glory at Wembley.

"The Carling Cup was a fantastic achievement. Everyone connected with the club was delighted and rightly so," Gerrard added.

"But it's gone now, it's been put to bed. We have to forget about that.

"We wanted to build on winning the Carling Cup by pushing for the top four but it hasn't happened so far as we've lost two on the bounce.

"We need to sort our league form out sharpish and try to get back to Wembley in the FA Cup. That Stoke game has become even more important than it was a few weeks ago.

"The frustrating thing is we went from a fantastic performance, an eight or nine out of 10 against Arsenal, to a three or four out of 10 against Sunderland.

"We didn't deserve to lose to Arsenal. We should have had the points wrapped up at half-time.

"But on Saturday there were no excuses. You can look for the easy way out and say the pitch was bad and it was windy but the fact is we just weren't good enough on the day.

"They dealt with the conditions a lot better than us and as players we have to take responsibility for a bad performance.

"When you go away in the Premier League you have to earn the right to play in the opening 15 to 20 minutes. You need to win the battle and then hopefully your quality takes over.

"We just didn't get out of first gear in the first half. We improved a bit in the second half but as a whole it wasn't good enough."

Throwing the players under the bus and not the manager is how it reads.

Call it PR speak but I expect him and Carra to firing rockets in the dressing room at 7.45ish on Tuesday. Making sure players like Downing and Henderson (if playing) are left in no doubt what is expected of them when the 50:50's are there to be won.

I dont believe them anymore, same old we need a reaction next game.

If the players are going to put in performances like Saturday, Kenny needs to drop the old arm around the shoulders and making them feel loved routine and kick them all up the f**king a***.

I really thought we'd kick on when he had 3 or 4 games under his belt after the injuries. Sadly, we probably have gone backwards, if anything.

Can't win can he.

not really, because actions speak louder than words.

we have heard this type of speech for a long time now and it's getting pretty boring.

do the job on the pitch for 90 minutes, give 100% effort, score some bloody goals and the captain does not have to dust off his old "up and at em" speech.

Say the same every week.

PR speak.

Its not nearly as bad as Charlie Adam telling us he hadnt given up on fourth place in the papers before the game on Saturday.

I know they have to say these things but hes the last person Im going to believe.

Although these comments are fair enough from Stevie I just wished that once our players would come out with this before the "smaller" games. Everyone here knows the players will be up for tomorrows game and put in a good effort. These games have for a long time not been the problem. And that doesn't seem to change this year...

Damed if he does damned if he doesn't.

Bingo.

I don't understand why people would come in here to read what he said and then say "he should do his talking on the pitch"... don't voluntarily read his words then!

Exactly, and also, Gerrard has hardly been fully fit this season

He shouldn't be praised or damned for it. It's just the usual sort of stuff footballers come out with, isn't it?

Yep. Long stopped paying much attention to footballer speak.

He needs to spend more time on the training pitch working on his shooting

it's been awful lately

Don't think he looks right lately. Came back from

Injury and was immediately very good but he's gone quiet lately. Struggling a bit.

Usually done by putting the ball in the net, more than the other team

Might help if he is played in his best position.

Instead we have to put up with Henderson playing in front of him which is a s*** decision

Can't wait for Carra-Gerrard to form our future manager/coach team. They will most likely never win the Premier League title as players but hopefully one day these 2 will win us the title as manager/coach.
