Boilers?

Perhaps It just wasn't on my radar but how are most houses heated in Ireland?I moved to the uk at 21 and since then boiler trouble seems to be something of an on going issue. Doesn't matter if you rent or own the house the f*****s are always on the blink!! Did i just grow up in a boiler nirvana or is the uk about 60 years behind everyone else?
