An article in the Telegraph by ChrisBascombe saying there is a 75% chance Rafa will be the next Chelsea manager :-(I hope it doesn’t happen!

Here

Sorry seen the other thread now!

Yeah, heard a few rumours of that type... how much of it is generated from just one source and ends up being escalated through a lot of filterless interweb dross regurgitators and how is genunine is a moot point I guess.

I'd love to see Rafa in work again and at a biggish club but I'm not sure I'd like to see him there....

They hate him. And I mean really hate him.

One of the guys at my local said he would rather have Steve Bruce than Rafa Benitez.

He couldnt understand why I started laughing

I would rather they had Steve Bruce too. Anything we can do to get Abramovic thinking this way too?

He used to dump their "special one" out of the European Cup on a regular basis and Istanbul overshadowed their first league title in 50 years.

Of course they hate him.

I genuinely don't understand how Rafa has ended up with such a negative reputation. Is there anyone around with anything close to his record who gets lambasted in the same way?

Sven maybe?

Steve Bruce.

No wait, that's the complete opposite.

Probably because he didn't like dealing with the media, and therefore didn't give them the soft soap, so the media didn't like him.

Managers who give the media, or at least certain key parts of it, what they want and make them feel 'special', get cut a lot of slack - Ferguson, Wenger, Mourinho, Redknapp.

Kenny is now getting and will soon get more, of what Rafa got.

Ferguson just bans them all unless they write what he wants

Yup. Although the Rafa hate is still extraordinary. He's loathed and ridculed, it seems, by everyone apart from us. And even within our own fan base there's loads who slag him incessantly.

It's weird, but just shows you the poisinous power of the media.

He's got the right attitude with the media. Uses them, distrusts them and manipulates them when it suits him.

It's their hypocrisy in being battered by him yet still kissing his a*** - while absolutely hounding others - that irks.

They're s*** f***ing scared of him.

The media gave Ferguson a hard time until he won his first league title. It was plainly not quite as vicious or small-minded as it is now but, like the managers who came before him, he suffered from not being Matt Busby. Winning the league on a regular basis gave him power over the media and to say or think that his ability to dictate the media agenda has anything to do with his disdain for it is naive. The media need him far more than he needs them.

I agree completely about the British game but I'm not certain that it is quite as dominant in the coverage of leagues in other countries. There is an intellectual element in the discussion of football in Spain, Germany and France. The Spanish coverage is the one I know best, and while some of the media would give the red tops and talksport a run for its money, there is not the same disdain for detailed discussion of tactics or attempts to see football as having real social, cultural and political significance. That doesn't mean that critical analysis is not available in the British game. The Blizzard, edited by Jonathan Wilson or Michael Cox's Zonal Marking are both excellent and you do get the sense that there are a number of journalists covering the English game that would like to offer alternative perspectives to the ones that dominate now.

There is a lot in that. Perhaps more fear than hate. Something above them. Cannot understand it so shoot it down.

There's something of that in the way they are turning on Kenny too. Not only does he outwit them with regularity but he is loved and respected by his people in a way they simply can't relate to and don't begin to understand. They are left outside of something they know must be the holy grail of any sportsman.

AS and Marca are f***ing s***.

I'd generally agree with this but there is more to the Spanish media than just these two Madrid mouthpieces. They are perfect examples of what happens when a paper, or its journalists, become effectively spokespeople for a club and/or its supporters. There is nothing good to be ever gained by journalists becoming close to those they are writing about or for.
