Red Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Bit worried about him to be honest. He's obviously looked b*ggered the last couple of games and I'm not sure whether he's carrying an injury, or still trying to get over his last one. Not to be too over dramatic, but I'm beginning to have doubts he will ever return to the level of fitness his high standards require. Should we be looking for a player of similar calibre to eventually replace Gerrard (if that's possible), or is it all a bit 'previous'?
Cooldude Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Should stick him near Suarez or whatever striker and tell him to stay there. He is wasted picking the ball up from the back four He mightn't have the fitness to play central mid week in week out anymore, but still technically so good and have great vision, could make a lot of goals still.
Dule Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 agreed, just play him higher up the pitch. We looked like such a better team against United when Adam came on, in BOTH games. Kenny made some big mistakes in his team selection last night.
D.Boon Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 He is nowhere near fit yet so lets give him some time. That little s*** Scholes is half the physical specimen Gerrard is and he still had the run of the park yesterday. We need to be smarter with how we play Gerrard, let him get fit and he will bee fine.
Logic Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 He needs to play further forward. He isn't a central midfielder. He either needs to play as one of the three in a 4-2-3-1 or (and I'm prepared for sh*t to be flung) in the Lampard/Kaka/Özil role in a Mourinho style 4-3-3. And we need to drop this 4-4-2 that becomes 4-3-3 in attack.
The_Adder Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 That's what I didn't understand about how we lined up yesterday, Henderson is no attacking midfielder and Gerrard clearly is, we played both out of position and it showed us up badly. Adam, Carroll and Bellamy all should have started too, but that is a different story.
Dominus Maximus Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 We messed up in January by not getting a new defensive midfielder. Gerrard is less influential when playing so deep.

Yesterday, he was playing with Spearing next to him and Henderson ahead of him with Kuyt and Downing outwide. By contrast, Scholes had Carrick next to him and Rooney ahead of him with Valencia and Giggs outwide.
Billy Dane Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I think the major problems yesterday were Downing (coward) and sadly Spearing. The latter works hard and is prepared to get stuck in but unfortunately he had too many passes that went astray - possibly because he was too often looking to get the ball to Gerrard. Downing shouldn't be in the side, and I question if he deserves a place on the bench, a big player in a small pond type.
RafaShanks Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 He's playing far too deep. Play Jay and Adam in the middle and let Stevie as close to Luis as possible. I'd even stick him on the right if necessary.

Lark Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 problem is Gerrard is our midfield. The rest of em are average technically. kuyt and downing are poor players, can graft but lose the ball too easily, they lose the ball and it comes back at us and spearing and henderson are chasing round trying to get possession back. Gerrard comes deeper and deeper trying to help us get a foothold in midfield. It shouldnt be like that. We need lucas and another player in there capable of bossing matters, we need wingers capable of putting the s***s up the fullbacks. Then we can unleash gerrard and get the full benefits.
DJS Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Should we be looking for a player of similar calibre to eventually replace Gerrard Good luck finding one.
Nebraska Red Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Gerrard had to play deep, little Jay could not make a pass more than 5 yards yesterday, and the only person he would pass to was Gerrarrd. He looked as pissed off yesterday as he did during the Hodgcon days, maybe he feels he's surrounded by some poor players?
richwilks Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 He looked a bit slow on the ball Saturday which was a worry, I'm not sure if he looked tired or a bit disinterested but I expect it was tiredness. The pace of the entire team picked up when Charlie Adam came on, he started driving us forward and should have been on earlier.
D.Boon Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Worth noting that Gerrard was playing in a Championship standard midfield on Saturday.
Falconhoof Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Worth noting that Gerrard was playing in a Championship standard midfield on Saturday. I wouldn't go that far but I would argue we need another midfielder, even when Lucas returns we need another option and at this stage I don't think spearing is going to be it. I still think its a bit strange we didn't buy anyone in January.
DarthVader Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Good luck finding one. Marek Hamsik is his name. I wouldn't go that far but I would argue we need another midfielder, even when Lucas returns we need another option and at this stage I don't think spearing is going to be it. I still think its a bit strange we didn't buy anyone in January. I think Staurt Holden (currently injured), the Bolton player who is a classic holding midfielder would do a great job for us.

Clay Davis Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I think Staurt Holden (currently injured), the Bolton player who is a classic holding midfielder would do a great job for us.More of a box-to-box player, Holden. Playing alongside Muamba he did a bit of both, I don't think he's your classic holding midfielder. Great player though.
Swipe Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Holden looked very good before his leg break. What's he out with now?

schmuckdonald Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I could get on board with Holden. Would want to see how he returns from injury, though. If Bolton got relegated, though. Should definitely be in for him.
