WWI Medals - Advice

For some time now I've intended to get my Grandfather's medals sorted. They are currently in a cigar box - lacklustre, tatty ribbons etc. I know not to go at them with Brasso and vigour but any pointers on how best to get them sorted? New ribbons / mounted?
