Epic Swindle Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Brilliant player. Puts things into perspective when you see muck like Cahill demanding 100k per week and Carlos Tevez playing golf. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2012/02/09/liverpool-fc-legend-tommy-smith-to-auction-off-vast-collection-of-medals-and-memorabilia-100252-30295573/
Gunga Din Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Surely the football club would buy them off him and put them in the museum?
Epic Swindle Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 (edited) Thought that, least they can do. In fact it should be mandatory if any ex player is struggling. I'm sure the players have got a bit of spare cash lying around. Edited February 9, 2012 by Epic Swindle
Tommy Cockles Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I'd pay £10k for his European Cup Medal. I wouldnt & I won't, but I would. If you know what I mean.
diggy Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 From reading the article is it a case that he says he doesn't need to sell them but that the money would comfort him knowing that he can leave his family a few quid. Saying that, be nice if the club or the current players can get the collection for the muesum, as Tommy says himself they've been lying in his loft or his bank for years with no-one looking at them. Hope all goes well. Its a shame it has to come to that for many of his generation. The current generation will have little interest in medals in year to come you'd imagine - well some of them anyway. You'd get the impression that some of them will be looking back through their bank statements and payslips with a tear in their eye rather that their medal collection.

Earl Hafler Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Surely the football club would buy them off him and put them in the museum? I think they will. Very sad state of affairs. Families up and down the country are selling their family military medals to raise money. I'd rather eat bread and butter for a month.
Cunny Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 £120,000The value of a career's worth of achievement is equivalent to half a week's pay for some of the modern players.

DaveLFC Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I'd buy them all, melt them down and have the resulting metal turned into a small statue of Emyln Hughes.
Epic Swindle Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 (edited) Aye, Emlyn the big tory. Regardless of his or any other ex legends views or beliefs, they deserve a few bob for their contribution on the pitch. Edited February 9, 2012 by Epic Swindle
Swan Red Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 It's sad that he has to but these were well paid for the job they were doing at the time they were doing it.
Eskimo Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 It's sad that he has to but these were well paid for the job they were doing at the time they were doing it. All relative innit.... I'd bloody love to have £120k worth of medals etc stuffed in a bank vault when I'm in my late 60's, hell I'd like it now!!
floyd the barber Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Surely the football club would buy them off him and put them in the museum? that was my first though.....Tommy was an outstanding servant of our club, shouldnt we be looking after some of our Ex pros. Surely a collection like this would be a fantastic coup for the museum and would be the best home if they cannot remain at Tommys. Time to start tweeting Mr Henry i believe!
Dmitch Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 This makes me wonder how much my gramps signed 78 final shirts worth along with the signed program and signed FA year book... has left me a load of them all annotated and all sorts! .... the bloke was a the biggest fan ever i think.. he hated life down south as he had to give up his season ticket! Even if that stuff was worth thousands id never sell it i love flicking through it all!
Earl Hafler Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Couple of years ago someone came into work with some AC Milan memorabilia. Some pennants, team photographs, rare programmes. At the bottom of the box were a few medal boxes. Turns out his Grandfather was Arthur Holland, a referee who was in charge of the 62-63 European Cup final against Benfica, amongst others. There was a 63 winners medal ( they had made too many ), a special refs medal, other medals and badges etc. All in 15ct gold. Also an album of original photographs of the various matches he had officiated in.
Boca Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Time to start tweeting Mr Henry i believe! I think it's time our fans starting laying off tweeting Mr Henry to be honest.
Falconhoof Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I think it's time our fans starting laying off tweeting Mr Henry to be honest. Why ? What will he do, withdraw his funding ?
Gunga Din Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I think it's time our fans starting laying off tweeting Mr Henry to be honest. yep. its cringeworthy
Ed the Wool Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 yep. its cringeworthy It wasn't when we were trying to get Hodgson out. I'd have tried anytihing.

Bootle Buck Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 So sad that a man who was so significant in building this club through the 60's and 70's has to even think about selling his collection. To think that our players we have today won't even come close to winning a fraction of that yet make almost enough money in a week or two to buy his whole collection is mind blowing. I would love it if in every game like the Bolton game the players were docked half their wages and put in a fund to help men who are legends and made this club what it is. It's beyond belief that a local lad who was the epitome of our great City and Football club should even have to think about selling his medals. As has been said maybe the club can buy them but if not I think a quick whiparound in the dressing room would certainly do it . After all the Liverpool Football Club these players represent today without the likes of Smithy would be a pale comparison.
