Hamster, gerbil, or guinea pig?

 

Most people seem to think hamster is the best first pet (aside from goldfish, cats & dogs) and I'm pretty sure that was my first.

 

Toby is 5 in May and wants a hamster (well he actually wants a snake but I've told him where he can put that idea) but they look so small and fragile I'm wondering if a gerbil would be better.
