You used the wrong englishmans name in the thread title, possibly because its in vogue to hate on Glen Johnson and you expected a better reception. Glen Johnson himself has been one of our better performers as of late, and is an asset to the team. Other englishmen have not, but they are the usual suspects and I shant go into too much detail.

He was shockinh, uttelry clueless in every part of the game. 10 games a season is not enough at this level.

Adam and Carroll are hopeless but at this lad should be doing far better. His defending is grim.

A good player who had a bad day, really short sighted to use him or any of our back 5 as scapegoats.

'British players in particular' is f***ing moronic given our history.

He's been crap for weeks.

he was rubbish today, almost as bad as Adam, he played them onside for (i think) their second goal

He was acquired primarily for his attacking abilities, whilst his defensive abilities are never as bad as anyone makes out. With regard to the former you cannot expect him to play the role of attacking full back when he continually gets exposed by a poor midfielder in front of him as even the best full back in the world would struggle in that situation. Similarly, you cant criticise him too harshly off the back of a game when all 11 starting players defended so woefully, nor can you expect him to play to his peak in every game. Players that can sustain a high level performance for 38 games per season are rarities, and the only reason Johnson stands out as appearing to underperform is that where other teams have players to take up the slack during other players poor games, we dont. If we had a team that matched Johnsons ability we would be nowhere near the problems we are experiencing as we speak.

Her was chronic in possession but that's as bad a defensive performance as I've ever seen, his head goes.

early on, the co announcer made some comment about Petrov not having the pace to beat Johnson, just as Petrov skinned Johnson.

Johnson was poor today and was poor last week. His defending has gone to pot in recent weeks.

Had no protection from Henderson while Adam and Gerrard were up their own arses the entire 90, hard to just blame the defence.

The Johnson being signed for attacking attributes isn't a myth, Rafa wanted a defensively solid left side with a more attacking right side, that's why we tried to sign Alves. But ho hum.

Have no problem with Johnson, used in the right way he's one of the best right backs in Europe. Have no problem saying that, either.

Carroll, Downing and Adam are perhaps some of the thickest footballers I've seen pull on a Red shirt, however. Well, maybe not Downing, he's more timid than thick.

There was NO protection at all for the whole defense, certainly in the first half. They walked through our midfield like it was a French infantry division for the first 2 goals.

I agree with all that, the CM is a big problem, but we're talking basic stuff here. His positioning and indecisevness in defence cost us and has cost us before. Maybe try him at RM.

Is that true? Our RB for years was Steve Finnan followed by Arbeloa.

I always maintained that theory, based on our attempts to sign Alves and eventually getting Johnson, whereas we were after left-back-c**-centre-backs such as Heinze and Kaladze. Versatility of the players we didn't sign suggests Rafa wanted 'possibilities' as much as anything, mind.

I like Glen and have been a long-term defender of the lad, but he was poor today. His attacking game isn't as sharp as it was when he first came to the club, which is unfortunate given our complete predictability in the final third.

we tried that last week v Stoke and he looked like a fish out of water, no idea where he was supposed to be.

the full backs need to form a partnership with the players ahead of them, we make so many changes that it must be close to impossible to strike up a decent playing relationship.

the problem is, who do put out wide?

Kuyt and Johnson work well together, but Kuyt is not up to it these days.

Enrique and Downing work well together, but Downing is crap.

we are struggling to fix all the leaks in the dam.
