Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has refused to condem Stephen Ireland after a picture of the midfielder posing with a shisha pipe was posted on Twitter.

Ireland has yet to produce his best form since moving from Manchester City 18 months ago, and courted negative headlines this week when his girlfriend posted a picture of him on the social networking site apparently puffing on a hookah pipe.

But McLeish will keep his thoughts on the incident private between himself and the player, although he admitted: "You don't want to be bringing attention to yourself".

Has he even played 1 game this season ? The most brainless 'footballer' of his generation.

His pink range rover is hilarious. If he could have plonked voronins bird in it wearing the leopardskin trackie I could have died of laughter

Something makes me furious about him posing for that picture. It's a combination of things with Ireland, but who the f*** poses with a shisha pipe ?

What a w*****

You wouldn't mind if he had earned the right to act like a complete t**. All he is at the moment is a thick footballer robbing a lving and rubbing it in the fans faces, most of whom can barely afford to watch the useless bell.

Shisha pipe? It's no fireworks in the bathroom is it? He'll need to up his game if he wants to play for the Mental XI

that's the conundrum about him though in't it? he looks like he could really do a job for the cuckoo's nest brigade but lacks the heart to really give it his all.

needs to nut a fan or stalk a ref soon, he's going backwards posing in daft pics - we already know he's a t***.

To be fair to the hateful little s***, his bird took that on her phone and stuck it on twitter. It wasn't posed for the public.

He'd washed up now. There will be some kind of half arsed 6 month comeback in a year or two at a Blackpool or a West Ham and people will laud him but he's done. The d****ead.

Scores the equalizer at Stamford Bridge, having a good game by the sounds of it too.

Nah he was garbage until the goal - doing the whole windmill arms when players weren't putting it where he wanted it. He'll get the hook soon enough too, the fat c***.

Good that he scored though.

I watched the game. He was good. Looked like he wanted to play football again.

Looks like he is off to New York Red Bulls in the summer. As per brochure.

I don't understand why more mediocre players don't do this. Go to America or Scotland and become a legend.

don't think there is enough money in either of these leagues

the average salary for an MLS player is around $52K a year
