Gambit Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Martin's performances this season have been superb. He's blossomed under Kenny and his understanding and partnership with Agger has been brilliant too. I used to consider Skrtel a ticking timebomb, always prone to doing something rash and giving away needless, silly fouls in dangerous areas. He's cut that out of his game and he's been so consistent and reliable. He's been one of the best centre backs this season in the league (although he won't get that sort of accolade outside of Liverpool) and deserves a lot of credit for the strides he's made.

He has improved markedly and their partnership is proving one of our great strengths. Both seem confident (or more confident in Agger's case) to receive the ball and play from the back and the silly errors seems to have been cut right down. Skrtel has also been using his size more effectively in being able to harry strikers more rather than 'dive' in.
honourablegeorge Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 The pairing's been very good since Carragher dropped out of the side. Credit to Kenny for leaving Carragher out too. CB all of a sudden feels like a pretty strong area of the team - Coates and Carra aren't bad backup to have.

smithdown Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Right side of the two and he's happy days. Seems simple now.
johngibo YPC Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 They were both great on Saturday. Skrtel in particular is on a great run
CarraLegend Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 They rock, refreshing lack of hoofing aswell.
Ed the Wool Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Still worry about him in the air, got lead in his boots. But on the deck I totally agree, he's having a great season and exceeding expectations.
MarkD Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Mr Clarke's coaching having its effect?? would make sense. They both seem like footballers now rather than harried waiters scurrying all over the place
honourablegeorge Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Skrtel being a goal threat at the other end from corners doesn't hurt either. Be nice if a few of them went in, mind.
D.Boon Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Wonder if come the summer Carragher is happy to stay and play second fiddle?
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Wonder if come the summer Carragher is happy to stay and play second fiddle? If he doesn't get back in the first XI by the summer, he's certainly got a decision to make.He probably feels he has at least one more season as a regular starter, and we know he loves to play. So does he leave, and take a pay cut, and lose his 'one-club man' status, to go to a mid-table team? Or does he stay, keep that status, keep that salary, and maybe challenge for honours with Liverpool?
Dan Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Best defence in the league says it all really. Credit to Skrtel & Agger but also to the full backs (esp Enrique) and Steve Clarke.
Gambit Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 I think with Agger's injury record Carra is due to get more games this season. But as much as I love Carra, I hope Agger stays fit all season. Our defence looks rock solid with Agger and Skrtel in the middle, and we are also seeing far, far less pointless long balls which are Carra's speciality. With Dan and Martin in defence, Reina behind them and Lucas in front of them, all top of their game, it's no wonder we've been so hard to beat this year (barring Spurs).
Ombudsam Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 The best thing about this is that Agger is over his injuries now. I don't care about mockers. He obviously is.

Were you last seen in Dallas with a smoking gun???FFS - has training finished this morning yet?? PS - If our lurker is still around its great to see your mate back in training
Logic Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 The best thing about this is that Agger is over his injuries now. I don't care about mockers. He obviously is.There should be a ban on sammya for as long as Agger's next injury will be for saying stuff like this!
Farmer's Tan Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 the thing with skrtel is that his form has changed so quickly, it wasn't a gradual confidence building over the season it seems like he woke one day and bang "i'm going to be the best defender in the league this season" which he will i he keeps putting in performances like he has been.

Cant think of one thing that it could be linked to.
Ed the Wool Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Cant think of one thing that it could be linked to. Slightly tongue in cheek, but Carra not being there screaming at him and dropping deep?
johngibo YPC Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Cant think of one thing that it could be linked to. A removal of a unexplained high pitched tone in his ear?
Senrab_nhoj Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 A removal of a unexplained high pitched tone in his ear?And the fact he is now using his left ear rather than his right ear to listen to his CB partner
Swipe Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Looks like an actual partnership, one in which the two defenders compliment each other. We haven't had one in a while.

He's getting time between league games, so we can manage him better. Throw European football back in the mix, and see how he goes.
