Brazilian legend Socrates has apparently died of an infection after contracting food poisoning.

Great player.

Ah sorry, just noticed that its been mentioned in the Brazilian league thread.

A great hero of mine. I absolutely loved that '82 side he captained and I remember running crying to my room after Dino Zoff saved his header on the line and Italy beat them.

The most laid back player ever and a man of conviction too, spending years working in Cuba.

He provides a great pubquiz question too cos he's the only non-Irish football international to have won a GAA medal at any level. With UCD back in the '60s.

I can remember being transfixed watching that Brasil side as a 10 year old. I was absolutely dumbfounded, it was a type of football I'd never seen before.

Socrates, Zico, Eder, Falcao... ...if only they'd had a decent centre forward. That Serginho was garbage.

I was gutted when Italy knocked them out but what a great game.

Yes remember that game clearly. Missed school to watch it. When Falcao smashed in their second to equalise in the second half I went crazy. Socrates ended that game playing centre forward which is what the Brazilian critics had been clamouring for the whole world cup.

So did I. Zico is my favourite non lfc player of all time and Socrates wasn't that far behind.

Motson was totally s*** back then too. How he managed to get all the finals over the years is ridiculous.

Regards,

Team Barry Davies.

I love the story that, as he was a heavy smoker, one of his team's doctors eventually pulled him aside and told him he'd have to give up the cigs or give up running.

He decided to give up running. He used to stroll around the pitch and was still head and shoulders above everyone else.

I think that if they had won that World Cup, and they should have won it, they would have been rightly lauded as the greatest football team of all time.

Bold words there, Pip

Considering they got knocked out so easily with some shocking defending

Zico, Socrates, Eder, Junior & Falcao were a joy to watch though

Yeah, not saying they would have beat all teams before or after them, but the 1970 team weren't known for their mean defending either. In 82, they got knocked out in the 2nd Phase of a World Cup and people still talk about that team, so imagine if they had won it. My own opinion is that Brazil 82 were the pinnacle of attacking flair.

RIP great player.

as for the above, sorry to ruin it but its bulls***!! Alex Bellos (Footie journalist based in Brazil) had heard these stories doing the rounds and asked Socarates face to face years ago. His response - "I've never even been to Ireland"!!

Would have been said of the Dutch if they'd won it in 74 too

Seriously? I'm crestfallen! (a favourite word of mine, btw)

Such a shame he's passed away. Made things look effortless, and boy did he like a back heel. The players in that team still trip of the tongue, 30 years later.

Best World Cup ever, with the best team never to win it. It had everything, some of those matches still rank up their, Italy v Brazil (use to work with a lad who was at that match) and West Germany v France.

Careca got injured before the tournament. Had he played in attack instead of Serginho, then Brazil might have won the trophy
