If the money is there to be made, why shouldn't he go there. Chances are it will be come more difficult for him to keep his standards as he ages, and getting paid more to perform at a less challenging level that he can cope with better makes sense.

I think his attitude is fair enough, given what he has won and his age. I'd be looking to earn top money for as long as I could.
