Before clicking the headline, I honestly thought this meant the rule where Rooney is allowed to abuse referees as much as he likes without any punishment:

Richard Scudamore rules out Premier League 'Rooney rule' and 39th game

Strange article though in that it put me in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with Scudamore. Unworkable in practice.

Before clicking on the thread I thought the Rooney Rule is where Rooney is allowed to launch into 2 footed fouls without even getting booked.

All they are required to do is interview a black person (for example) for the job, not give him the job

In which case it doesn't matter if there are 2, 20 or 200 clubs in the premier league

So Scudamore has missed the point, and I disagree with you thats its unworkable in practice

It's maybe workable but the real question is how effective it might be. Making rules for the sake of making rules is pointless. An equivalent of the Rooney rule would fundamentally rely on there actually being an interview process. I think this will be a case of soft power winning out, as it did with players. This is small c conservative sport and myths are there to be busted, be they the aptitude of black managers, never played the game managers, foreign managers, English managers etc.

I take your point - better to substitute the word 'ineffective' for 'unworkable'.

Another example of the Rooney rule in their game today by the way, he just swung on Collicini like his leg was a size 5 Mitre and the ref did nothing.

If they introduce a Rooney Rule for football management, will they introduce one for football print journalism too? Or do black people not read, so the only requirement is to put Garth Crooks and Mark Bright on the telly and Stan on the wireless?

Ha just read on Redcafe that Collocini showed good sportsmanship and didn't make a fuss like a player like Suarez or Pires would...

Not one like Nani, Young, Ronaldo or countless of other Manc players new and old....
