Except Yaya Toure isnt a holding midfielder

 

Who is the holding midfielder in that team then? Just because he can play doesn't mean he's not a defensive midfielder. The non footballing DM is a modern construct, and our greatest sides didn't have one.

De Jong is very good, think Lucas is better though. Toure is never a holding midfielder, nor Barry.

 

Lucas and Parker are the best two in the league.

Momo wasn't really a defensive midfielder in the strictest sense either though, he was more of a heat-seaking missile than a fortified wall.

He's a bloody monster and cant be pigeon-holed as a holding midfielder, he's closer to a Gerrard in his pomp than he is to a Didi Hamann. He gets around the field and his athleticism allows him to cover a great deal of ground, but he is not somone that plays behind the ball most of the time that cuts out free spaces and uses his off the ball intelligence to restrict options for the opposition.

So if De Jong isn't playing because Toure and Barry are the preferred two, are we saying City don't have a holding midfielder? This is revolutionary.

Barry plays deeper but I don't think he can be classed as a holding midfield player.

 

Like if we played Adam and Gerrard - doesn't mean Adam would be a holiding midfield player.

Barry looks like the holding midfielder to me this season. Although, yeah, he does get forward more. Silva plays more centrally too.

Barry is always deepest. Toure spent last season infront of Barry and De Jong, gone a bit further back this season but wouldnt say he holds.

 

You say that CL, but he probably gets in the box more than Toure.

Lucas has undoubtedly come on leaps and bounds and is probably now one of our 'undroppables' which is some achievement. Where he excells now is going toe to toe with the top teams in the league, next I want to see him improve his forward play against the weaker sides where that holding attribute isn't as essential during the game. Lucas, be the beast I know you can be!

Barry takes the ball off the centre halves and plays very deep.

 

He gets in the box more than either of our two central midfielders.
