where should I buy a beginners bass guitar

My lad wants to have a go at learning a bass. I've tried unsuccessfully to persuade him to get a 6 string guitar but he wants to try a bass, he likes the sound.

I don't know the first thing about guitars and want to pick up a good value guitar and amp. Where can I look online or do I have to go into a music shop ?
