Massive Faux Pas

I work in Business Development and had a fairly important meeting today, there were 4 people present from the company I am trying to sell to.

There was the main man & 3 of his colleagues. The main man dominated proceedings, the others made occasional contributions.

Anyway the meeting went well and at the end the Main man says to me "Chris here will take you back to reception". Handshakes all round.

As I am walking back to reception with Chris (who I realise actually said nothing during the meeting) I make conversation by asking "so how long have you worked here Chris?"

He responded with a strange unintelligible noise and then "years". Which I took to have been that thing that people do humourously when they don't want to say how long they've been somewhere, been married etc.

So I laughed (falsely I might add cos its not really funny, but I was just being polite).

"Oh too painful to say eh? Come on, it can't be that bad!" I quipped.

He shot me a dark look and I knew something was wrong.

Then we arrived at reception and he made the same unintelligble noise and then "reception"

b*****d had a speech impediment didn't he....

Shrank like a salted snail so I did.
