New York Red Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I'm just not sure. Plus of course it is early days and things can change a lot. BUT... Carroll -- Good player, lot's of raw talent, but massively short of experience. 35 million just seems like way too much for him. I can't ever see him being good value for money. Suarez -- Worth every penny and much more. Henderson -- I think he might be the worst waste of money of all. A lot of cash paid and a lot of hype. I can't see him being a good buy. Adam -- He was cheap. I know he was terrible today, but he is just the type of squad player we need. Never a starter. Downing -- He was expensive, but he is really looking good to me. At last he is with a good team and he looks like he will thrive. Doni -- Cheap. How bad could he be? Bellamy -- Two year deal. Good value also. Great record. Unless he goes mental I don;t see how he won't be good value. Coates -- Too early to tell of course, but where can you get a starting CB for a top ten national team for less than 10 million? Enrigue -- Good price, a clear starter. He'll prove to be great value. I guess what I am saying is that I have some real concerns that we have wasted a lot of money on Carroll and Henderson. I hope I'm wrong.
honourablegeorge Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 If we sign nine players and only two fail to make it, we've done well.

Epic Swindle Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Oh my. Think I'll hibernate until wednesday night.
CarraLegend Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Every club wastes money, get used to it.

Earl Hafler Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I'm just not sure. Plus of course it is early days and things can change a lot. BUT... At this stage, i'd have signed Parker instead of Henderson. The latter may progress into an excellent player, but we haven't really addressed the main problem at the centre of defence. Parker and a centre half would have been preferable to all that money on a young, more creative midfielder. We've made progress, but questions have to be asked about not addressing a long standing problems in defence, and the tactics today. Naive.
Dan Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Get top four and add a few top drawer signings in the summer i.e a cb, cm and a striker and we'll have a brilliant squad. This is first phase of the rebuild not the finished article and people will do well to remember that.
Cam Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 If we sign nine players and only two fail to make it, we've done well. But if those two cost £50m? 2 bad uns from 9 is a great success rate but the big spends need to be hits.
charlie clown Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Lets wait til May before we do this Agreed. Everyone always punts out the 'it takes a full seson for new player to bed down properly' line until the results don't go according to plan then suddenly the new signings are a waste of money, over-rated and a liabilty. You can't have it both ways. It's two bad results, and in one of those we were robbed. Calm the feck down peoples.
matlfc Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Its the 35 million one that worries me. Agreed. Enrigue -- Good price, a clear starter. He'll prove to be great value. I guess what I am saying is that I have some real concerns that we have wasted a lot of money on Carroll and Henderson. I hope I'm wrong.Adam at £8M with just a year on his contract wasn't cheap. I was never keen on signing him. He was totally overhyped by the media and he was a big fish at Blackpool who got relegated, I never felt he could step it up to a top side. He should only be a squad player. If we're relying on him to be a key midfielder for us, we are going to be in trouble. He would get nowhere near the starting 11 of the sides we're trying to compete with. Carroll was a panic buy, we all know he's worth nowhere near £35M. He has the physical attributes to be a good striker but whether he has the mentality to be a world class player, I don't know. He was a massive gamble. Downing was over-priced but he's a good player. Think we shouldn't have paid more than £12M though. Henderson is the most baffling signing for me. We paid £16M and I have no idea what he brings to the team that we already didn't have. Aquilani, Meireles and even Spearing are better than him. Such a strange signing especially considering the players we let go to accommodate him. Luis was a bargain even at £22M. We could get double that amount if we wanted to sell him. Fantastic signing.Enrique also was a good signing £6M. Overall - I think yes we have wasted a lot of money.
ChrisC Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I think Carroll will come good and its obvious he needs a run of games and a lot of fitness work, Hendo however is an awful signing IMO, can't for the life of me understand why we chose to buy him.
Bliki Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I've said it before on here that it is hard for me to understand the amount of money we spent on Henderson. He is not ready for our first team IMO. He could become a good player but we should have spent those 20m on a proven player.

Henderson is the one who probably come good. Carroll for me just looks clumsy and not interested. A panic buy and will be gone next year. I hope i am wrong.
alias75 Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I think we've done ok, we've improved the strength of the squad you only have to compare our bench this season with last season to see that and thats with Gerrard and Johnson injured all season. Suarez, Enrique and Downing clearly improve our first 11.Henderson is a young player with lots of scope to improve, he shouldn't be in our strongest 11 but he looks like he has a good attitude and im sure he'll improve.Carroll is also very young and offers us something not many teams have, however we have played the majority of our best football when he hasn't been in the team and he clearly needs to improve. In hindsight i think the £35 million could have been spent better but he's our player now and we need to forget about the fee and get behind him, but he also needs to show an improvement in terms of his attitude.Haven't seen much of Coates but Carragher needs replacing soon so he should get a chance.
Kring Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Carroll, Henderson and Adam are waste of money..... This could prove to be another 20 more years without a Premier League trophy....
Epic Swindle Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 (edited) Think we need to remember that we can't attract a lot of the top players without CL. We've assembled a team for an assault on 4th and it's a building process. We're stronger than previously, with CL we'll be even stronger with lads like Adam providing excellent back up. Spion kop Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 we overpaid for Henderson and Carroll, this is not news. But start naming alternatives we could of signed for that money before instead of just crying over the past.
Toni Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Considering that we have reduced the hefty wage bill, whilst adding an huge no of players, i do not really care if we wrongly spent a 35mill. Club is on good hands now.
johngibo YPC Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 What's boss about it? The ridiculousness of it. 20 years!
Epic Swindle Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 The ridiculousness of it. 20 years! It's the reality, we haven't been good enough. No point wimping out now.
New York Red Posted September 18, 2011 Author Posted September 18, 2011 Aguero, Forlan, Hamsek, Honda, Hazard, Sanchez, Mata. Yes, yes I know these players haven't necessarily wanted to come to us, but fifty million is a ton of money and everyone has a price. There are loads. I think we have been a little too focused on British players.
