Swan Red Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Think he's going to be a player, came on for the under 21's yesterday and was pinging balls around looking to get involved and drive the game and demonstrated why he fits in with what we are doing. We are building a team of players that want to play football, want the ball at their feet and look forward. His pass to Suarez for the goal against Fulham last year shows what he's about and his passing yesterday was excellent. Someone posted that he may have tried to force it too much and while I can see that I'd rather a player at his stage try too much than not enough. I'm delighted he didn't go on loan as part of the Adam deal, I think him being here allows us to let Meireles leave, he may not be at Meireles standard yet but looks good enough to go significantly beyond that, as did Henderson, albeit as different types of player. I'm usually pretty ambivalent to international football but I'm enjoying football more than I have in a few years and will watch stuff I usually wouldn't but I think the under 21's will be really good for him and Flannagan to get some game time.
matty Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I agree, I think he could become terrific. Some marvellous passing last night, although the Azeris were woeful and allowed plenty of time on the ball. Biggest shock was just seeing him last night. I thought he was Irish.

Montse Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi9zl4cv7og&feature=player_embedded Been impressed with him too, remember when he joined his first interview he said he wanted to play 20 games last season and it raised a few eyebrows. Dont think he was far off it Great one for the future - and present
mrjunk Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Coined something off topic for me there. I'm also really enjoying footy at the moment and actually looking forward to watching England tonight for the first time since the gerrard tapping up fiasco! And in Henderson and shelvey we gave some very hot prospects.
matty Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 He's from a Traveller family. That's a rumour that DH and Mike made up, and which also happens to be true.Ah, I didnae know that. Hope his family don't live in Basildon.

Alonso Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I think he's fantastic on the ball and always looking for it but needs to work a lot harder when we don't have it and be more psoitionally aware which will come with experience. There's been a few times when I've seen him and if he loses the ball or we don't have it he appears lazy.A very minor criticism and one that can easily be worked on especially with the coaching staff and players we have.
johngibo YPC Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I actually think he should have gone on loan this year. He needs games in central midfield. And not necessarily for our ressies
Maldini Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I think we'll have to be patient with him, he'll be a mix of flashes of brilliance and s**** for another year or two. His biggest problem is he can only play in a midfield three or off the forwards, he doesn't seem to have the tactical awareness or physical presence to play as an orthodox midfielder, he was shocking there for the 19s last week. He's in a great position as Gerrard's backup now with Raul gone, I think he gives us something off the bench as well.
schmuckdonald Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Still a couple of years away, definitely. Also concerned by his attitude, particularly in that game in the Next Gen series. Hoping he can realise his potential.
lfc003 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I actually think he should have gone on loan this year. He needs games in central midfield. And not necessarily for our ressies Agree and i like him but just think his defensive side is non existent and a loan to a top Championship side would have been ideal.
Clay Davis Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 he doesn't seem to have the tactical awareness or physical presence to play as an orthodox midfieldersimilar to Raul at this stage - so there was no point having two of them! He might turn into a player Jonjo but i'm not going overboard on him yet, as you say he was pretty woe against Lisbon.
johngibo YPC Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Agree and i like him but just think his defensive side is non existent and a loan to a top Championship side would have been ideal. I often wonder whether there was a possible scenario where a player would train three days a week with us, and then two days a week at a club we loaned him to. And then play for themHas this ever happened before? Obviously they'd have to be local
Swan Red Posted September 2, 2011 Author Posted September 2, 2011 Nah he's a player already, he's raw but I would rather have him on the bench than have Meireles there and him out on loan, I think he will get game time and I think the fact he's here and Meireles isn't is testament to Kenny's faith in him. I'd also rather have him on our bench than someone elses and given he's raw and has aspects of his game that needs work think he needs to be around better players than he would if he was at a championship club.
Leo No.8 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 (edited) He is a talent, seems to have a good attitude and confident as well which is good - I like him a lot. I have to say his passing and running style as well as his physique and build remind me of Gerrard a bit, but he'll never be as fast and dynamic running with the ball so doesn't have the same ceiling of potential Stevie had. I think the ideal role for him would be the one Adam is playing now - advanced with a bit of license in a midfield two where he can play a killer ball. He is a good kid to throw on to try to make something happen, as he has something about him so I'm glad he's stayed with Raul leaving. I suppose in hindsight the plan must always have been for Mereiles to go, or otherwise Shelvey would have been out on loan. Edited September 2, 2011 by Leo No.8

One thing though - his attitude - he really didn't seem interested in that 19s game against Lisbon, like he was above it, that's what it looked like anyway. Other than that his attitude has been bob on, but if he thinks he's 'too good' to be playing at any level he needs to jib that off straight away.

Yeah I didn't see that Nextgen game TBH so can't comment, but the first team and reserve games I've seen him in (as well as his interviews and press) his attitude has been really good - basically very confident without being a pr*ck about it.

But at the moment I wouldnt even put him on the bench, if we haven't got a few injuriesReckon he'd get far more from going on loan similar to Raul at this stage - so there was no point having two of them! Raul can play wide right, which i'm not at all convinced Shelvey can
Swan Red Posted September 2, 2011 Author Posted September 2, 2011 Think given the other players that can play wide right the fact Meireles can and Shelvey hasn't shown any sign of isn't enough of a reason to have Meireles still here all other things being equal. I think we are much less likely to have Meireles leave if Shelvey isn't here though. I'm not suer how much game time he would get elsewhere and I'm also not sure that all game time is equal. I think we can do more having him here coaching him than having him playing or on the bench for a club that's struggling isn't going to help him much. One of the things Comolli said wrt the signing of Coates is that we sign for the mid to long term and that we sign them young to make them better players, they can do a job now but properly coached they will do a better job down the line. Think that's equally applicable to Shelvey

Agree and i like him but just think his defensive side is non existent and a loan to a top Championship side would have been ideal. I think players learn far more about defence playing for a big club than they do for lesser clubs. More is asked from players defensively at big clubs.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 loved it against Spurs when he smashed one of their MFs into a ad hoarding. It was a ballsy thing for a kid to do, he has the mental toughness and that showed it
Molby Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 He's from a Traveller family. That's a rumour that DH and Mike made up, and which also happens to be true. what? ffs I see him as the natural replacement for Gerrard if he fulfils his potential, on the explosive but it can go either way: his lack of discipline and tactical nouse could be coached in to him or it could coach out some of his natural abilities (unlikely with KD and the boys looking after him) or he may never take on the tactical aspects of the game properly and therefore underachieve....which is my only slight concern
David Hodgson Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 He's from a Traveller family. That's a rumour that DH and Mike made up, and which also happens to be true. It IS true.
