I think Cascarino is an absolute tool but surely he meant the actual meaning of the word holocaust rather than the post world war II appropriation of it

I'm with you on that one. Looks to me like a spur of the moment effort at finding a differnt word to describe an utterly gash performance by a player.

Next time someone says 'goal famine', i'm going to be an offended Irishman cos of Black '45 :)

Burnt offering? I doubt it.

He meant that Traore played like an ancient Greek sacrificial animal burning?

Think it's absurd to make a fuss about this. I'm sure he wasn't meaning to be disrespectful - I think he just used a word that was more ill-fitting than the normal hyperbole type ill-fitting comments. You could easily see someone saying what happened to Arsenal today was a massacre. In a sporting sense it was, but obviously nobody was slaughtered. I think he was probably looking for a term even stronger than disaster, massacre, etc, and just ended up with a word that made even less sense when talked about literally, particularly in relation to a single player. but FFS, people really should use their energy to be outraged about more important things.

it's because he's not scottish. all scottish pundits are hardwired to say 'shocker' in this instance. english pundits typically go with 'nightmare' or if they read books, 'one to forget'. cascarino, being a puzzled mix of english, irish and french, confusedly decided to go with the 'he's had a genocide of the jews there jeff' option.

can't stand him. he's like claridge in that his arrogance as a pundit far outweighs the ability and achievements of his journeyman playing career.

People are quite entitled to ask questions about this. He invoked the holocaust when describing a players awful performance, ffs. What the f*** was he thinking?

Not a chance he was thinking of the original meaning of the word, either. He's an absolute bellend. Thick as champ but sees himself as some sort of "tell it like it is" Everyman. The comparison to Clarridge is apt. Pair of imbeciles.

As others have pointed out, using the original meaning of the word makes even less sense than giving it its more widely known meaning.

About the best you can say for him is that he had a vague idea that the word had some sort of other meaning and so he thought he'd try and be smart by using it even though he didn't really know what that meaning was.

But even that is no defence.

He's done a Pardew. Bit odd for me. Even trying to come up with the worst hyperbole description I doubt that would suddenly pop into my head. It's not like it's commonly used word.

He invoked a holocaust or the holocaust?

What do you think of when you hear the word?

It's utter ridiculous hyperbole by Cascarino but the word is used regularly in historical documentation to describe mass slaughter. 'Nuclear holocaust' is well defined in the lexicon.

I am not interested in defending Cascarino but this is an utterly ridiculous 'controversy'.

Goes without saying that not even Big Ron would have gotten away with the ridiculousness of "he's having a holocaust."
