Falconhoof Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 His set pieces were such a large part of his game, i'd have thought he was automatic to take pens. But him and Suarez had a wee chat and decided Suarez could have a go. Shouldn't happen again.
Stevie H Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 1. gerrard2. dirk3. adam then probably downing or agger if none of the above three happen to be on the pitch. imagine maxi could take one as well. aquilani likewise as it goes.
épieur Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 surely one missed pen shouldn't disqualify Luis from ever having a go again. What is his record with penos before we rush to conclusion and put every man and his dog ahead of him in the pecking order?
Nate. Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I think Dirk and Adam are easily the best peno takers at the club. Dirk is dead eye though.
Stevie H Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 it wasn't just 'missed' though was it? it went orbital.
Epic Swindle Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I think Dirk and Adam are easily the best peno takers at the club. Dirk is dead eye though. Gerrard is brilliant now. There was stage where you just knew he would score.

What is his record with penos before we rush to conclusion and put every man and his dog ahead of him in the pecking order? He's scored plenty but he's also missed quite a few including two in one game. I've never liked his penalties, often the same way and often too close to the keeper though I guess that doesnt matter if they go in but Dutch league keepers are probably the worst in world football.
abc Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Suarez used to take them for Ajax didn't he? I'm sure his record is decent. That miss was so bad it hilarious if I'm honest. I chuckled a little after I saw the replays. Not sure if it would have been that funny if it was in the last minute of the game but...
honourablegeorge Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 If my life was on the line, I'd have Dirk taking it. Man's a rock.
owenthomas Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 i do not worry about Stevie anymore.. same with Dirk.. he's deadly!..
Stevie Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 If my life was on the line, I'd have Dirk taking it. Man's a rock. He'd be my choice too.
The_MC Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I was very surprised Adam didn't take the penalty but Suarez is aiming to be one of the top scorers in the league and was probably desperate to get off the mark (plus he won the pen so i doubt a newbie to the squad like Adam wanted to argue). I'm sure Dirk will still take them when on the pitch in future, and Gerrard or Adam will take them when not. 9 times out of 10 a peno should result in a goal, otherwise you are only gonna throw away needless points. Whoever is the best pen taker on the pitch should take it, regardless of who won it. Suarez may be decent at pens, but why let him take it when you have someone like Dirk who never misses (*or Adam/Gerrard who are both specialists)?
Hassony Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 9 times out of 10 a peno should result in a goal, otherwise you are only gonna throw away needless points. I think the conversion rate overall is actually around 60-65% in the premiership
FMac Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 There should be a competition in training every month, or possibly every week. Anyone who wants to be considered for peno duty has to take three pens against each of our keepers, in front of the rest of the squad. Winner, second etc. is the order on match day, until the next competition. Loser has a forfeit of some sort.
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Loser has a forfeit of some sort. Yes.They have to choose pop or slash.
PhilM Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I read a stat somewhere that hopefully someone can back up. Dirk Kuyt has NEVER missed a pelanty in a professional football match. Certainly can't remember him missing one for us.

Gerry Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I think the conversion rate overall is actually around 60-65% in the premiership Nope. More like 77-78%.
lfc003 Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I expected Suarez to take it sat and if we get another pen next week and Dirk and Stevie aren't playing i'd expect him to take it again providing he's confident enough. This ain't another Owen situation, Suarez has great technique from the spot.
The_Adder Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Dirk is a 100% man, it will be Stevie if he is on the pitch though. Was surprised Adam never took it.
D.Boon Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Yes.They have to choose pop or slash. Glass of Special Brew, with peanuts and olives added, warmed gently in the microwave for 15 seconds.
