OK, just a small intro. I work in Manufacturing Improvements so I basically collect a lot of data and then find ways to improve various processes. After seeing the "Realistic ambitions for the seadon[sic]" and at the same time being very bored I decided to gather a bunch of data to see if I could find anything interesting.

 

I gathered points, goals for and goals against since the league became a 20 team league and took a look at some trends. I then collected all results (W, D, L) for us since 2006-2007 and tried to take a look at the average point total and such things.

 

Anyway… check the presentation I put together (worst layout ever…) and check out if you find any of this interesting. If so I could update parts of it through the season to make it easier to see how we are doing. :)

Excellent work. Clearly showing a trend where the strong are getting stronger (relatively speaking). Money increasingly talking ?

I've also worked as manufacturing engineer looking at process improvement and I remember doing a similar thing a few years back! biggrin.gif

That's better than some green belt projects I've reviewed.

 

what do you do? do you look at potential development on greenbelt sites and conclude that it's a good idea?

Money is probably one of the biggest factors, see here for a good example of it. But I'm also wondering if the drastic decline in goals conceded has something to do with the smaller teams "not showing up" against the bigger teams and just trying to keep things close.

A few more factoids I found out.

 

1. Of the teams we have played more than once the last 5 years Arsenal at home (1.2pts/game) and Arsenal+Mancs away (0.6pts/game)) are our toughest opponents.

2. A big surprise IMO, was the fact that after the ones mentioned above Birmingham (1.67pts/game) and Wolves (1.5pts/game) at home and Birmingham, Stoke and M'boro away (0,67pts/game) are our toughest games. These are games we perhaps usually expect to win when looking at a fixture list but quite clearly aren't doing to well.

if we'd beat sunderland we'd have won the league last season

Probably just a few hours. I'm still thinking about how to present current progress through the season compared to "required" steps towards our two goals (CL qualification + Title). I'm also trying to figure out a good error factor for estimated final points gathered as I believe results vs. historical points data should be able to give a good enough estimation of final points total.

 

I also think I'd score high on any autism/OCD spectrums. :P
