growler Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) Does it annoy anyone else when London clubs complain of havin so many derbies? Fulham v Chelsea, sure. Arsenal spurs ok. Charlton west ham yes. But is arsenal hammers really a derby? And fulham west ham? Can take hours to get across. In relative terms Blackburn mancs Bolton schitty blackpool would be derby matches. It came from a debate about the best derbies and one mentioned chelsea hammers was a good 'un. Edited July 23, 2011 by growler
Falconhoof Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 West Ham Millwall is a more authentic derby.Chelsea Fulham Its only London though, a football backwater really.
John am Rhein Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 if they complain about too many 'derbies' then the solution is simple: relegate 50% of london clubs automatically
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Derbies in a 'same city' sense yes, but not in a hostility, bragging rights way. How many Fulham fans will be ribbing WHU fans for being relegated? Not that many. You could argue Liverpool-ManU is a derby, probably closer in proximity than Chels-WHU

johngibo YPC Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Loads of needle when the North London clubs play West Ham.

Swan Red Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 The Real Madrid Barcelona game was billed as a derby in amongst all the el classico b******s from Sky this year and Us v the Mancs is deffo closer than that, I also think clubs like Leeds and Leicester want a derby so attach the label to whatever their most significant local game is still not derbys mind
sutty Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 What's the origin of the word though? Because you often hear people describe something as a local derby, which would be a tautology if locality was inherent in the word derby. Derbies.
sutty Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 "The actual source is more prosaic. The Derby is the name of the premier horse race in England and the contest was founded by the twelfth Earl of Derby in 1780. Since at least as early as 1840 'derby' has been used as a noun in English to denote any kind of sporting contest. A local derby is just a sporting contest between local rivals. Early uses of the phrase referred to football (soccer) matches and the first printed citation appears to be the Daily Express, October 1914: "A local Derby between Liverpool and Everton". Such matches between the two clubs are still energetically contested. Many other clubs in this and other sports now meet to contest their own 'local derby'. " So apparently they are derbies. But then every match is a f***ing derby.
Swan Red Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 yeah apparently according to wiki us and the mancs is the sky derby which amuses me

Benzo-13 Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) Borussia Dortmund v Schalke 04 is the biggest derby in Germany even though they're miles apart - Ruhr/Westphalia. Edited July 27, 2011 by Benzo-13
Mooster Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Less than a month away from the first A420 derby for a decade.
Stevie H Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 north-east 'derbies' can f*** offthey can. they're not allowed them for only allowing one major team in each city or sh*thole town. nobody ever calls man united - leeds a derby do they? it's not called the derby of the roses is it? though if sky ask i am patenting that now.
Murphman Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Does it annoy anyone else when London clubs complain of havin so many derbies? Fulham v Chelsea, sure. Arsenal spurs ok. Charlton west ham yes. But is arsenal hammers really a derby? And fulham west ham? Can take hours to get across. In relative terms Blackburn mancs Bolton schitty blackpool would be derby matches. It came from a debate about the best derbies and one mentioned chelsea hammers was a good 'un. Spurs v Arsenal is a proper derby. Chelsea v Fulham isn't because despite their proximity Fulham are sh*t, were managed by an owl and are no threat. Everybody in London detests Spurs, in that sense West ham v Spurs takes on Derby significance although Millwall is nearer. Fulham and QPR is a derby, they don't like each other at all. Finally, for all the times I've been called a stupid senile old c*nt by him, Macca you are a f*cking knobh*ad of the highest order!!
Coyler Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) I think the 'local Derby' had to have been originally applied slightly patronizingly or even with fully understood self-deprecation, as in 'the biggest fixture possible — in the eyes of those simple local folk/us passionate local folk, that is, ha ha'. As long as that holds true then it's a local derby, Shirley, whether the outside world thinks, "Ah, bless" or not—perhaps it's even more of a local derby if everyone else does think it's a pathetic rivalry. Liverpool against United and Barça against Réal can be seen as proper derbies, empirically massive fixtures, with no hint of irony, as I don't think that the proximity of the two cities has any bearing on the wider appeal of the ties. (The Dublin Derby, after the demise of Drumcondra, used to be Bohs against Rovers, Northside vs Southside, until Rovers moved to Wicklow.) Edited July 27, 2011 by Coyler
