Doni may actually start the season and allow Reina more time to recover and get back to fitness.

It may explain why we were after Friedel.

We needed a decent reserve keeper because the one Hodgson / Purslow bought is gash, that's why we were after Friedel and that's why we bought Doni, it's not relevant whether Reina will start the season or not, he can get injured at any time regardless.

Totally agree with your assessment, however I do believe it's vital we get Reina back asap.

We've let Gulacsi go on loan today, so hopefully we are confident

I have reservations about Gulacsi.

Seen this said about Suarez and Lucas quite a few times.

Lucas got knocked out of the Copa America nearly a month before our first PL game - just can't understand why on earth that would make him unavailable? Even Suarez will have nearly 3 weeks between the Copa final and the Sunderland game if they get there (24th July to the 13th August). I fully expect both to start in that game, and i'm sure both players will want to do so - I reckon you'd have to chain Suarez up to stop him.

With regards to Doni I do wonder whether we'd have bothered if not for Reina's injury? I think perhaps not, but as far as reserve keepers go he has decent experience and pedigree.

Don't think fitness is just the issue, they'll get a bit of rest but won't have any match practice. Think Kenny might give them an extra week to prepare and ease them in. We should be able to wallop Sunderland regardless.

When you put it like that Leo, yes i'm sure they will want to play. Its just the factor of having a proper break away from football that I think may be important. Switch off, have a drink relax on a beach for a week or two with the family. Then get back to training. I think that could be an important psychological start for the season ahead. So if you give Lucas and Suarez, say 10 days fom the end of their tournament to just f*** off away fro the footy and then start training, do they then have enough pre season to be ready for the start of the league ?

Both players are already match fit, So a week or 2 holiday shouldn't be cause for worry. It's not the 80s anymore when players disappeared on booze filled holidays and came back a stone overweight. They're professional athlete's so i'd imagine even when given time off they still will hit the gym or treadmill to maintain their fitness.

I would expect both of them back on August 8th. Maybe Lucas back a few days before that. Week's training up to the Sunderland game unless they are both on international duty again in the midweek before the season starts! Hopefully not.

Uraguays first friendly was May 29, he's been playing pretty much non stop.

is potentially a bloody good side and more than enough to beat sunderland....would rather give lucas and luis a bit of a rest then risk injury...

Regarding Doni, well again if Reina is not 100% then Doni should play....end of story, no point risking a long term injury

LucasLeiva87 Lucas Leiva Em Porto Alegre Para rever a família e semana que vem de volta a Liverpool .

Lucas back next week (don't know if that means beginnning or end of mind). Hopefully that means Luis just another week, giving him at least one full week of training before Sunderland. Guess it all depends on the fitness guys, and how they do in various tests, but looks promising, given the lack of holiday Lucas appears to be taking.

Really cant see Stevie playing anytime soon.

But as it stands we would still have Aqua, Raul, Shelvey, Spearing and *shudder* Poulsen.
