The more I see the mid 90s Fowler the more I want to cry. What a talent! Also Barnes at the end, can hardly run but will never lose possession and that pass!

Still gives me goosebumps seeing that and remembering the night so clearly.

What's really funny is how absolutely awful awful the defending was for most of those goals, but particularly for Collymore's winner. Newcastle have 4 players near the penalty spot, and as well as Collymore being free on the left, McManaman is just standing in acres of space screaming for the ball.

My mate,a Charlton fan, when he gets a little drunk-always starts chatting about the best Charlton player he's ever seen. John Barnes. Says exactly what you just said, that he couldn't run, but just kept the ball so well and passed beautifully.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

Charlton Athletic was a Premiership team. Occasionally they would sign players for short term periods to add depth and class to the squad. One of those players was John Barnes.

By the time he pulled on a Charlton shirt at the Valley Barnes was well past his sell by date. He'd gained a few pounds, all his pace had evaporated and no stamina existed. Yet he was in my opinion one of the greatest players to play for Charlton ever.

Barnes was only used intermittenly by manager Curbishley. He made only 12 appearances and scored no goals. He did not stop the newly promoted Addicks from plummeting back down to the Championship. In fact he had no impact on the future of Charlton. Come the end of the 98/99 season he retired as a player and has gradually taken on the odd managerial role including his current club Tranmere Rovers.

I'll remember those fleeting moments when he would thread through a ball with perfect weight and speed. I'll remember mentally noting the superior difference between his waning skill and those he played with. He is the first world class player I watched at close quarters and he played for us.

Talent on the opposing teams didn't count. When Beckham or Giggs had the ball I trembled in fear. I couldn't admire them because I dreaded the damage they could do. I wanted them to fail. I was at the Valley to watch my team and my players and finally for a short period we had a player who surpassed many of these legends in ability, class and demeanour.

the likes of Ferdinand, Shearer, Rob Lee and Pavel Srnicek played a thrilling brand of football which won admirers all over the world

That's being a little bit generous really seeing as he was sh*t in goal and probably cost them the title.

Insane, letting Barnes and Rush play a dozen miniature one-twos as they walked slowly towards the box.

Barnes one of only 2 outfield Prem players to have played over 100 games and not been booked.

The other is Walcott.

The best thing about that is Keegan when Stan scores the winner, just slumped behind the board!

Collymore makes me so angry. He could have been a world beater, the wastrel.

David James was a feckless c*** as well.
