I heard him speak the other week, often stop and listen to him, he said his big battle is not giving into cynicism, believing people still can get things done when so many give up.

Met him at a Labour Party Conference a good number of years back and he was gracious, funny and intelligeny company, despite my intial splutterings about how he was one of my heroes. We talked about House of Lords reform for a little while and it was one of those very rare occasions when you get to meet someone who hold in hugely high esteem and your respect for them only heightens. A genuinely good man.

This was posted in the phone hacking thread but most won't see it in there and it deserves it's own thread

Not entirely related but do you think that tribalism in football is a major factor in the struggle for justice. For instance if Hillsborough had happened to Manchester United would The S*n have been greeted with ambivalence by us as opposed to the hatred it deserves.

I know that The S*n was in a way able to get away with it because of Liverpool specific issues and how the city was perceived so it's not easy to do a straight swap of circumstances.

If the whole football community had stood together consistently would that paper have shut down by now or am I actually doing the rest of the footballing community a disservice and they did indeed back us strongly.

For the past 22 years, people in Liverpool have boycotted the Sun newspaper because of the lies that it printed about the behaviour of Liverpool FC fans at the Hillsborough disaster. Ninety-six people were crushed to death at a football match at Hillsborough in Sheffield on 15 April 1989. The Sun ran a front page story that accused Liverpool supporters of variously robbing and urinating on the dead bodies of the victims as they were laid along the touchline. The reports were totally unfounded. Since then, many people in Liverpool have refused to buy the Sun on principle.

As I listened to the unfolding reports of the phone-hacking story last week, it occurred to me that the scousers had been right about News International all along.

I think It would be the same situation, different city. A boycott may have been set up in Manchester but I can't imagine it being widely supported elsewhere sadly. There isn't really a footballing community, just a load of local interests in the same league.

I just find it so sad that paper is widely accepted. I see people with it and just wonder how it can fit into a normal persons worldview.

They played it on Absolute radio last night with a disclaimer that some people may find it offensive (swearing?), or may not agree with the lyrics.

f***ing hilarious

s*** tune, great sentiment.

Bit bizarre that people have felt any need to comment on its musical merit or otherwise really, but a few have done.

It should simply be unreservedly applauded.
