legal advise for dispute with employer

I was on a temporary contract which came to an end. Submitted an invoice which was late being paid so I started to get a bit nervous and tried to contact the guy I worked for but he wasn't answering my calls. Now i've had a letter disputing several items of conduct and reviewing my performance and offering around half of the invoiced sum.

So, £750 for a months work plus expenses he's offering. The wages were bad enough as it is but this is taking the piss.

 

I don't want to go into the contractual details on this forum but just wondered if anyone knew who are the best people to speak to about making a claim. Small claims court ?
