The Manchester press has been highlighting a blooper at last Tuesday's dinner in honour of Manchester United's Gary Neville when the anthem of rivals Manchester City was played.

 

More than 1,200 fans attended the dinner in the gloriously renovated Fort Manoel at Manoel Island.

 

"But many were left spluttering into their five-course feast when the opening singer, a former Eurovision entrant, closed her easy-listening set with the Eastlands favourite Blue Moon," the Manchester Evening News reported.

 

"Her version of the City anthem boomed out over the renovated fortress before its conclusion was greeted with a polite smattering of applause from puzzled punters."
