Tosh Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13929349.stm Jamie Carragher has admitted there is a fear factor playing for England. "One mistake and you could be absolutely slaughtered," the Liverpool defender told BBC Radio 5 live. "At your club, you know you will not be criticised as much and perhaps three days later there will be another game. "With England, it could be months before you have another fixture. There is a fear at times when playing for England." Carragher, speaking a year after England's elimination from the World Cup, said players sometimes buckled under the media scrutiny. "The intensity of the press does get to the players," said the 33-year-old. "Sometimes I think players would prefer the press guy to think they had played well, rather than the manager." Carragher played in the group games against the United States and Algeria after coming out of international retirement but was on the bench for the defeat by the Germans. In a BBC Radio 5 live documentary, to be broadcast on Tuesday at 1930 BST, Carragher appeared to criticise England's set-up in South Africa, arguing that players were bored. "You stay in a hotel all day but you are at a World Cup for a long time and should be able to experience different things," he said. "I wouldn't want players holed up. Take away the boredom, embrace the country we are in more. You never see anything." Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp echoed Carragher's sentiments. "I spoke to a few players who said they were sat in their rooms waiting for the day to pass," said the Spurs boss. "Some said they were bored out of their brains." "The rewards, the money that is involved in club football and the desire to play in the Champions League - it seems the international game is almost taking second stage," he said. "Players are loved by their clubs but not always when they play for their country." England won only one of their four games in South Africa, recording a 1-0 victory over Slovenia in their final Group C match, and were widely criticised for their poor performances. Coach Fabio Capello remains in charge and has started to place more faith in youngsters like Jack Wilshere and Adam Johnson. Former German international and coach Franz Beckenbauer believes Capello should place more trust in his younger players. "I like Fabio but maybe he still holds on to older players," said Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as a player and as a coach. "Maybe he should be brave and bring on more youngsters. England always has a lot of youngsters." Three Lions of Africa, examining England's World Cup failure in South Africa, will be broadcast at 1930 BST on Tuesday, 28 June. ****** That'll be Beckenbauer who oversaw a root and branch review of training and coaching methods in germany specifically to produce German teams (club and national) who play with tempo, strength, and technique. lfc003 Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 More rubbish then There's a fear factor playing for every top country, It's not mutually exclusive to England.
smithdown Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Good of Harry to chip in with his comments. Hadn't realised he was in the slightest bit interested.
MarkD Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Harry's solution to England's problem when he's appointed the next manager? "I'll speak to the chairman and see if we can do a deal for that lad currently playing international football for Germany - a triffic little player but it will be difficult as the Brazilians, the Spanish, I know they are watching him too. I don't like talking about another country's player but...if he managed to get himself a British passport, of course I'd be interetsed but that's not up to me."
Elephant Stone Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 At least he aint playing for Colombia. Now that's kin pressure!
Nebraska Red Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 More rubbish then There's a fear factor playing for every top country, It's not mutually exclusive to England. there probably is , but I don't think that the media is as vicious in any other country.
Elephant Stone Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 there probably is , but I don't think that the media is as vicious in any other country. Pretty nasty in Brazil and France from what I've heard...
Nebraska Red Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Pretty nasty in Brazil and France from what I've heard... Can't see the French press getting as personal as the English media, luckily for Brazil, they seem to be a decent looking team.
The Hitman Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 What about when Italy came back from the World Cup in disgrace. There were people at the airport throwing veggies at Arrigo Sacchi after that. The pressure's just as bad in Italy/Brazil/Argentina etc, in my opinion. That's probably a contributory factor, but it's not the major factor.

Hassony Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Bored in your room? There's a World Cup on! Watch the matches on telly. they train for 6 hours a day, there are couple of games a day on tv they can watch that will kill another 4 hours, lunch and dinner should take another 2 hours, sleep for 8 hours so they have fours hours left to watch tv, play COD, w***, read a book.....
Antynwa Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 There is a nervousness to their play. I think part of the problem is that if you look at Spain, there are no standout individuals mainly because in their respective club sides they successful as a team so there isn't any pressure on an individual perform. Look at the stick Gerrard gets, he gets it because he's our standout performer and people expect that in the England side. Same with Rooney, Druggy and Lampard. They are key players in their respective sides, and they are expected to have the same influence on the national stage when it really doesn't work like that. England need a young english manager, a 10 year plan and we need to let him get on with it.
