Barnes' left foot Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmAo0uiarvA&feature=related Enjoy.
Epic Swindle Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Not bad. Beardo was a big cog in that machine. Sexy f*****. What a ball to Rushie in the 89 final
smithdown Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Re Rushie, those ones in the final were sublime - the turn and shot was pure Rush, he was doing that regular and I can't think of any other striker who had that move boxed off so well, yer shearers/van bastens/anyone, he didn't miss those, he just slotted - and for someone whose heading was supposedly poor compared to lumps around at the time that little nudge is sweeter than anything else you'd see in any cup final. And they were good defenders he was up against. Anyway. Just saying, he was ace was Rush. Don't doubt it.
Epic Swindle Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 (edited) Just class. You rarely get to see the that kind of subtlety and imagination these days. Edited June 10, 2011 by Epic Swindle
Guy_Incognito Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I've been wanting to start this thread for years. 3rd best player we've ever had - til Gerrard finishes and we can properly assess him, That goal vs QPR at 2.59 is perhaps my favourite ever LFC goal. I remember hearing he was on £10000 a week, the flash b*****d... And did he really own digs above a dentist on Walton Breck Road? Cos if I earned that much, I'd live elsewhere How much would he be worth today?
Earl Hafler Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 The John Barnes Story is well worth getting if you can find a copy. Some of the footage on there is not on Youtube.
heighway Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Fantastic player, oh to have the likes of him available today! Btw, have any of you on here read Dave Hill's "Out of his Skin" book about Barnes and the whole racism issue at the time? Haven't read it myself, I believe it's supposed to be good though?
Chewie Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Do you think if kenny did not go on to be such a big influence on the whole club that barnes might even compete for the greatest tag? Chewie
Zoob Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Just class. You rarely get to see the that kind of subtlety and imagination these days. And In all 6 minutes of clips I think there's just one step over. He's was just brimming with outrageous skill and control that other players couldn't cope with. Never tire of watching clips of him.

smithdown Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Great header away at Villa in the cup. That was a really big win, iirc, cracking awayday.
Ethan Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Just awesome - makes me so excited to watch players like Digger
goodrobotusses Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 We need one of him. Could do everything. Left, right, head it, dribbling, crossing, free-kicks, passings, quick over the ground. Sigh. Also, we should totally bring back the red nets.
StevieC Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Do you think if kenny did not go on to be such a big influence on the whole club that barnes might even compete for the greatest tag? Chewie Purely in playing terms, if we were able to compete in Europe when he was in his pomp, I reckon there would be more debate. He was majestic and we'd have brought #5 back much sooner I'm sure.
Cobs Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Do you think if kenny did not go on to be such a big influence on the whole club that barnes might even compete for the greatest tag? Chewie no Cobs

Nerik Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Whenever the ball went to Barnes out on the left, you could always sense that we'd be threatening to score. Amazing player/

Amazing player/ It was the surest thing in football, let's see what he does to them this time...and when he had a shooting chance from the outside of the last defender he would score, always, iirc. Thing is with these compilations, they only show the goals, for every one of those there were a dozen other boss runs.
Mikael Akerfeldt Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Might not be considered the "best" but certainly my personal favourite LFC player of all time.
Elephant Stone Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Massive disagreement with my old man on this one. He reckons he was massively over rated, I thought he was quality.
Jonesy Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Massive disagreement with my old man on this one. He reckons he was massively over rated, I thought he was quality. I used to love the fact he was slated by almost everyone for not being able to produce his club form for his country. Personally I couldn't give a shiny s**** what did he did in an England shirt do long as he didn't get injured whilst doing it. There were times where he was just unstopable. An amazing talent.

Exactly. He was immense for us.Look at the quality of goals that he scored for us. Right foot, left foot, headers, beating 3 or 4 players and then scoring. He's up there with Kenny and Stevie for me

He seems to divide opinion. That being said it's always worth weighting a bit more on folk that watched him every week like.
