Every season I write off the mancs and whilst the same signs are there with goalkeeper, rio, rightback, giggs, scholes, centre mid etc I refuse to do so this time.

So why not? Hernandez, smalling and fabio look players. De gea is a hot prospect. Paying 20mil for a keeper shows they have money.

This gone season they walked the league playing very poorly for the most part. Add in what they will spend for cm and they will be stronger.

Finally, and this is a big one. The glazers have got away with it. They are now generating a surplus and will probably pay down their debt. In a few years time they will have positive cash-flow with lower debt meaning money to invest.

I expect them to buy a cm a wide creative and possibly one other.

Horever the caveat to this is, they are more beatable than in a while so hopefully they don't address all their weaknesses.

Agree - it's never wise to write them off, since there have been so many times when people have thought they need a major overhaul, and then a few scrappy wins and 10 points courtesy of refs later, and they've won the league again.

However...whenever a team needs to get a new keeper, there's always a possibility they will weaken themselves in a key area. I know nothing of De Gea, but there have been plenty of hot prospect keepers who come to England and can't hack it...

The most scary prospect for united is if they get a good central midfielder.

They have a manager who'll drag them over the line if they're within a sniff of winning the title. They've got a lot to think about this summer but they'll be alright and will defo have a chance of winning the league again next season.

If the mancs don't bring in a quality centre half then they are skint and will struggle at the back. Ferdinand isn't the player he once was and needs competition, Vidic has been carrying him for a while now.

they have Smalling, Brown, O'Shea & Evans as cover

they're fine at centre back

Not fine at the back for a title winning team and one hoping to over take Barca. IF Ferdinand stays fit they are fine at the back but that's a big if now. If they had the cash i reckon they would be looking at Ferdinands replacement. Don't think that's any of the names you mention unless Evans regains form consistently.

Definite question marks at the back in my opinion.

Smalling has been surprisingly excellent when he's played this season, they've won the league and gone unbeaten in Europe until the final, not conceding a goal away from home and that's with Ferdinand making a grand total of 29 appearances across all competitions - they're fine at centre back

IMO, of course.

Surprised at Owen getting a new contract. If this means he's being kept on to play more cos of Berbatov's imminent departure, that'll do me.

Looks like they aren't skint and have found Ferdinands replacement.

well, i've never thought they were skint

they've found a £16m defender for the future, he's 19 not a hope he's ousting Vidic & Ferdinand as first choice, and is behind Smalling, Evans & arguably O'Shea (who all made a decent amount of appearances last season) in the short term.

I think he'll start above Smalling, Evans and O'Shea quite easily, myself. Evans is off isn't he?

They'll be plunking in the same amount for De Gea as well.

I have no idea, Cobs. Just forwarding what my Manchester supporting friend told me. But there have to be mid table clubs who'll plug in 8 m for him. Always are. <_<

It will be interesting to see if they spend even more money in midfield. Gotta surely? Could be spending 40-50 million net by the time the summer is over.
