Dominus Maximus Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 So 5th is right around the corner. The reward is a place in the Europa League. We will enter in the fourth qualifying round. One knock-out round before the group stage. Last season we played 14 times in this competition but went out early. Europa League seeding - 4th Q Europa League seeding - Group Stage from http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/seedel2010.html Positives That's seven extra home games for revenueIt can serve as a more advanced reserve match scenario for youngsters and Joe Cole. Negatives Seven extra away games. The team could go to Scotland, France or Germany, but it could also end up travelling to the Ukraine or Armenia on a Thursday. Games pile up. It could potentially put a serious damper on our quest for fourth next season. Tottenham doesn't want in. Harry said so himself. They lost to Blackpool yesterday. But the question is, do you want in?
smithdown Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Spurs should be banned if they are deliberately losing matches. But they drew anyway so...
Rimbeux Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Dont buy into the 'Arry line, he's just spinning the potential of finishing 6th as a blessing.
magneto Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Do I want Liverpool to finish as high as possible and play in a competition which may bring us extra revenue? Let me think about it.
Gerry Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 (edited) In case you haven't figured it out yet Jallow, the correct answer is of course yes. Edited May 8, 2011 by Gerry
badtodabone Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 we should always be pushing to finish as high up the league as we can, if we finish 5th and get uefa league we should be pushing to win it as we should always with every trophy we compete in
Swan Red Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 so the two people that voted no either voted no because they'd prefer us finish fourth which makes sense or they voted no wanting Liverpool to not win one of our final 3 games which doesn't
Tones Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Of course we want to be in Europe. We have a big european history. Why wouldnt we want to be there?

Yep, Europe is massive, especially with a crop of young talented players coming through. the game time and big game experience will be vital. and i'm not talkng about the Hodgson approach of throwing them all in and then blaming them when they lose, but putting maybe 3 or 4 in with the first team during the group games, which we should be able to negotiate handily enough without players like Gerrard, Carra and Reina.
John am Rhein Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 mixed feelings about this because the UEFA cup has become a bit of a nonsense and thursday games are a pain in the ass, but on balance Yes is still a better option than No
owenthomas Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 (edited) Aldo was spinning this same s*** line last week after the Newcastle game.. what's wrong with some people? ok, i understand that there's some rubbish games at rubbish times but it's a trophy and LFC - as a certain saying goes - exists to win trophies.. we should want to be in this competition and we should want to win it.. in addition, next season there is no 'quest for fourth' or hope to get back into the Champions League places - there is only a wish to win the league.. EDIT: by the way, listening to Aldo while driving home after the match is enlightening.. i'm quoting him here when he said "i don't want the distraction of the Europa League because you don't want to be playing in a competition where you've got meaningless games on a Thursday and then having to pick yourself up for the Sunday's league game.. then if you manage to get yourself out of the league into the knockout stages you've got the chance of getting knocked out in the quarters an all that.... no.. [at this point he realises what he's just said]... y'know.. if you win that though you've got the semi's and then hopefully the final.. might even win it.. but.. y'know.. we've got to be looking to push on in the league, getting back into the Champions League places.............." he's fkin mad lar.. Sion Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Don't really mind either way.Plenty of negatives to worry about if we do get it. But European football is European football.
stressederic Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 If we can't cope with a league campaign alongside some European matches then we're in a seriously bad way. There would be no point in qualifying for the Champions League either as the same thing would happen again. We should be looking to finish as high up the table as possible and qualifying for a European competition. We should then be looking to win that competition.
Rory Fitzgerald Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Who knows what our squad will look like come August - hopefully its well staffed to take on the challenge - and the extra cup games could serve to spread the opportunities around rather than burn out the same group of players.

If Europa League will stop of getting top 4. Then getting into top 4 and playing in the CL would stop us getting top 4 the next year surely?

Epic Swindle Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 I'd rather do without the Europa but I want to finish 5th. It would be a huge psychological boost. It hampers preparitions badly. Sometimes we're not getting back until Friday night. You can say the same about the CL but it's a different mentality. Thursday-Sunday really takes the edge off.
Montse Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Would we go straight to the league or have to play a qualifier in early July or whenever?

If you think whoever in charge will take a completely different 20 man match squad on Thursday to Sunday then you're dreaming. Sunday games are crapThe actual quality of the games are crap6 o'clock kick offs But some decent aways and a chance to win something. Like I said, not bothered either way.
Tommy Cockles Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 It amused me hearing a Spurs fan the other day saying they want to finish 6th rather than 5th. One half decent season in the CL & you think the EL is beneath you. Vintage Tottenham.
