David Hodgson Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 ...have been varied since day one. Still the deep tactical thinker he always was. Yesterday's 442 with a diamond midfield made the best use of very limited resources. Very narrow on paper but we never lacked width with Suarez prepared to stretch the play at all times. Tactically he is being used and is playing in a very Beardsley-esque manner.
Elm0 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Is it vogue to try and relate everything that goes on at Liverpool to someone or something from "back in the day"? I understand nostalgia but surely its best to look at whats best going forward as opposed to how similar something looks to the past?
alias75 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 When you have players like Meireles, Maxi, Suarez, Kuyt, Gerrard we're always going to be very fluid, they are all very intelligent players in terms of their movement, Suarez and Meireles in particular are a nightmare for teams to pick up because their movement is so good. Once the young fullbacks get more confidence they will get forward more and help with the width, but some of the football we played yesterday was excellent/

I understand nostalgia but surely its best to look at whats best going forward as opposed to how similar something looks to the past? What are you on about ? The comparison to Beardsley ? It's 'vogue' because he's the last great withdrawn striker we had, and he played and flourished under Kenny Dalglish. Nothing else 'retro' in my post unless you think 442 and talk of diamond midfields are old hat. In which case you'd be very wrong.
Ombudsam Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Two forwards. Kenny likes two forwards. forget this 3 up top or 3 behind 1 malarkey.
yellow jumper Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 (edited) if barnes, beardsley, and aldridge wasn't a kind of 3, it's a close run thing. certainly with the option to be when on the front foot. in a slightly more developed way kuyt, carroll and suarez have been too. if we're doing the old school comparisons, maxi was houghton yesterday. Yes. We played a 442 in the 87-91 period, but Barnes on one side played wider and further forward than Houghton, who was more tucked in. Maybe not too dissimilar a set up to United's treble team which set up 442 with Giggs the widest of the midfielders and Beckham, wide but narrower. Two forwards. Kenny likes two forwards. forget this 3 up top or 3 behind 1 malarkey. Yep.
MarkD Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Pass to a fella in red, keep the ball and yourself moving, harry the oppo when they have....as it always was. (Barca get lauded for this )

John am Rhein Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Tactically he is being used and is playing in a very Beardsley-esque manner. does this mean Suarez's wife and Dalglish's wife will have a fall-out? Give over, Maxi isnt a massive c***. 20 years from now he'll be on RTE slagging off Spearing's tactics and transfer record

David Hodgson Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 How about Gerrard being our Houghton next season? I think that's a good shout, but it won't happen.
Mike Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) there have been a few key changes under kenny already, we attack in numbers and get bodies in the box, but just as importantly and unsuprisingly unnoticed is what we do when we don't have the ball. we press and harry like f*** to win the ball back high up the pitch. I remember some moustachioed Welshman with an affinity for milk n baked beans who used to be our first line of defence... wonder if kenny ever knew him Chewie
Drexl Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) I think that's a good shout, but it won't happen. -----------------------------------------Carroll --------------------------------------------------Suarez(John Barnes) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------Gerrard ------------------------Lucas-------------(McMahon) I'd like this. Gerrard would certainly be the best man for the job. Edited April 25, 2011 by Drexl

Yes, very simple things but always likely to win you matches. Its the basis of Man U success over these last 2 decades. If you fill the team with top class players and willing workers and play to those basic guidelines you'll have a chance of the league title in England. We won't be a million miles away if we stick with Kenny and Commolli gets his buying right. A couple more of the quality somewhere between Carroll and Suarez and we'll challenge next season.
Gunga Din Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Another thing about Kenny, is how much more the players seem to be enjoying playing. the whole mental approach has changed and the players all seem a lot happier than they have done for years

JRC Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Aldridge was contrasting the current five-a-side, pass and move training with the 'militaristic' drill of the previous incumbent as being part of the positivity and enjoyment.
Ethan Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 In the modern game Rafa is a better manager than Kenny - but as a club we need Kenny right now and in the past few months he has rebuilt our club - Rafa would not have been able to achieve that - Kenny will leave this club in a better position to adopt a new manager like Rafa in the future. Both are great men that have different attributes but utmost love of the club and the fans

Both are great men that have different attributes but utmost love of the club and the fansyeah, good post. kenny's undoubtedly the right man at the right time. and his ability to motivate players and get them enjoying their football notwithstanding, tactically he's making those in the press who said you couldn't come back after ten years out or whatever look very silly indeed.
Falconhoof Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) In the modern game Rafa is a better manager than Kenny you don't have the evidence to make that call. Kenny's 2 best Liverpool sides would have won the league any time rafa has been our manager. He did it again at blackburn, He'll build another for us. edit...i know your post was in support of kenny also...I just don't see anyone as a better manager. Kenny was forced out of the game for health reasons when he was as good as anyone. Edited April 25, 2011 by Tony Le Mesmer
