David Hodgson Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Didn't want to bump the 'he's f*cked' one. Anyway. Thought that was quite a cameo at left back yesterday. I'm lovin the breakthrough of the likes of Robinson and Flanagan but I think the Shelvinator is being taken a tad for granted. He's only 11 months older than Flanagan but looks good enough now for regular first team football. I hope when Comolli talks about not blocking the path of kids by signing too many in their positions that he had Shelvey in mind. He may not be a product of our academy, but of all the 'kids' we're touting at the moment, he's by far the likeliest to be a big star.
Dan Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 (edited) Looked the least ready of all of them for me. Talented but lots to prove yet. Edit: Caveat is I didn't see yesterdays game. Edited April 24, 2011 by Grabiner
sean Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I like the bloke, he has an old head on him, as you say it's been taken for granted a bit. Been a while since I allowed myself to be this positive about the club.
kop205 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Not see that much from him yet, he's been ok a couple of times including yesterday. Crucially though, Kenny seesm to rate him - when he's been fit, he's tried to get him involved.
Kahnee Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 He's only a kid, and last season was playing in League One. Think he's handled the step up well, and will improve over the next couple of years. He's strong, got good technique and seems to have coped with the move from Charlton without going off the rails.Anyone slagging him off needs to have a word with themselves
David Hodgson Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 Looked the least ready of all of them for me. Talented but lots to prove yet. Edit: Caveat is I didn't see yesterdays game. No. He's the most ready. Easily.
crisps Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Yep he's only just gone 19, I'd give him a couple of season before even remotely judging, it's taken players like Lucas and Nasri a good few years to look like they really belong in the league!
Elm0 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 He seems a cocky bugger. Exactly what will prove to be his making. Will be great for us, no doubt.
KD07 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I thought he looked a lot more positive against the Brum than he had for his previous appearances. Showed good pace and didn't need much time to settle into the play. He probably needs a lot more experience before he can be a real contender for the middle of the park, which is probably his preferred position.

He's got a couple of years on Jack Robinson, so its unfair to compare, but he looked a different proposition when he came on in his position. Even allowing for the fact that it was late in the game he really energised things and was a real threat coming forward down that side. I'd really like to see us try him out in that position, because, as you say, its a big ask for a 19 year old to start games in the middle.
smithdown Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I'd be happy to see him start against anyone and expect a decent game from him. He looks proper.
alias75 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Cos his main position is central midfield i think he needs to go out on loan so he can play there for a season, maybe in a lower level PL team maybe for a top championship team. Hes similar to someone like Alonso in that he can only really play in the middle, so while its good for him to get experience he does look a little uncomfortable when asked to play out wide. But hes obviously very talented and i do think people forget how young he is because we signed him and he hasn't come through the academy. I agree he did well when he came on yesterday and this exposure to the PL will only help him, but because he plays central midfield which is such an important position i do think he'll get limited opportunities there for us next year, so maybe a loan is best for his development.
Elm0 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I dont see why we just cant consider him one of our 4/5 for CM for next season and rotate him in against the weaker teams with some experience around him.

He looks ready. The more he plays the quicker the rough edges will fall off. Everyone gets better with age, but he has the physicality and confidence to go with his ability now. He needs to play, and play at the top level. Yes he'll have some howlers but I think he could quickly become important .
smithdown Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I don't want him to go on loan. I want him in our squad wherever we go.
David Hodgson Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 I don't want him to go on loan. I want him in our squad wherever we go. Yeah. No loan for him. Loan Spearing out. Or sell him. Someone has to make way .
alias75 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I dont see why we just cant consider him one of our 4/5 for CM for next season and rotate him in against the weaker teams with some experience around him. Im not so sure, we have Lucas, Meirles, Gerrard, Spearing and we're probably going to sign someone that will all be ahead of him, central midfield is such an important position as we've seen he's not really played there yet for us at all. I think he'd benefit more playing a full season in central midfield than the odd cameo for us usually out wide where he doesn't look too comfortable. Not that id be worried about him if we had to play him but i just think his opportunities are going to be limited here in central midfield.
Swagger Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Yeah. No loan for him. Loan Spearing out. Or sell him. Someone has to make way . Not Spearing. I didn't rate the lad at first, but these last few games he has positively surprised me. I'd keep them both.
Jarg Armani Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Spearing won't play as many games next season so it might make sense to loan him out.
David Hodgson Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 Not Spearing. I didn't rate the lad at first, but these last few games he has positively surprised me. I'd keep them both. Id like to keep both but it may be unfair to. We look likely to add Adam and a defensive midfielder in the summer. If that happens you could have Gerrard, Adam, French African guy, Lucas, Shelvey and Spearing vying for just 2 positions. It's too many. People are going to get pissed off. It's a shame, but I think Jay may be sacrificed . At least he's worth reasonable money now.

Actually he's only a year older than both robinson and flanagan, both fullbacks are born in 1993 and shelvey in 1992

Gerrard can also play off the striker and on the right.
Dan Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 That's how I feel. If someone told me now that Shelvey will start every game next season, I'd take that. Bizarre statement. Especially as you expect s*** loads to be spent in the summer. In the squad yes. A starter every game? Give over.
David Hodgson Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 Bizarre statement. Especially as you expect s*** loads to be spent in the summer. In the squad yes. A starter every game? Give over. I meant hypothetically. It wouldn't be my first choice solution, but if the football gods decreed it to be so, I'd trust Shelvey. I thought that was implied.
