Never understood the desire to sell him, he was £20m rated not so long ago, and it will cost us much more than we would receive for him, to replace with anywhere near that quality. He lacks pace, but so do most of our first team at the moment. He's exactly the kind of player that should be retained if we're looking to improve the squad this summer.

Disagree - he was a top player in his day, but that was four years ago.

He is still a good player, no doubt of that.

Not good enough though for a side that has serious title aspirations.

We need to move onto the next level and sign a player of the calibre of Hazard or Young to replace him.

He was an astute signing by Rafa when you consider we were skint at the time, but all that has changed now.

Yesterday was very much the exception not the rule. He's had a poor season, which can only in part be put down to Hodgson. He's not a wide man and much like Raul doesn't get involved enough or take charge enough to be played centrally. So i dunno really where he might play next season

I was desperate for him to stay this season but if he's sold in the summer it will be fair enough

Disgaree.

He's had an up and down season rather than a poor one for me. At times he has struggled, but at other times he's been good.

No problem with us keeping him as a squad option.

Sell him and we have to sign two quality players to actually improve the squad.

When the problem all season has been squad depth after a few years of erosion, it's rather obvious that he'd be a player to retain especially with Jovanovic & Cole almost certain to be leaving. Mystified as to how people think we're going to sign so many new players in one window.

Agreed, and I think he earned that extra chance with yesterday's performance. He's like a number of our current squad in that his A game is at a level we should want and expect. It's when he's not 100% at the races that he just barely contributes. Still, as you say, a good squad player he certainly is.

And especially given his age, he won't be demanding to play every week.

We would probably only get a few million for him anyway, pointless.

Yep, he's got little re-sale value. Getting rid would be pointless. However, I can see the player himself not necessarily wanting to settle for a season of limited opportunities. His view is going to be very influenced by what we do in the market this summer.

Alexei Sanchez sort of sounds like Maxi Rodrigez.

At least you know Maxi runs down the wing for you..

Alexis will need to earn that trust..

I won't mind having him in the squad for next season. He fills a niche as an attacking midfielder confident in possession who knows where the goal is. Has experience too. Fits in well with Kenny's style of play, even if he is not that outstanding. I think we could use a player like that in the squad, provided we have different options to draw on as well.

He is preferable to Joe Cole who would fill pretty much the same niche if he stays and we don't really need two of them in the squad.

my mate f***en hates him - he's got a season ticket so see's him all the time and just cant give him any credit.

Got a text off him yesterday after the game saying Suarez even makes maxi look good!

I'm not saying they'll be looking to buy him but if he was in the squad at the Mancs, Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs they'd be looking to keep him. They seem to understand the value of the squad whereas we're always looking at players for the first XI (that old "last piece of the jigsaw" mentality). He's exactly what we need and exactly what we should be looking to keep hold of.

There's squad players on the bench that definitely should go before him, like we saw yesterday, he did more than cole and jovanovic have done all season. We can't be spending 100m on 4 quality attacking players, I'd definitely keep him for one more season, until possible futher recruitments or even a couple of the youngsters like pacheco and sterling etc might step up...

Yep - Jova should go before Maxi, and if Poulsen also goes then thats 3 'senior' squad players gone that need replacing (although tbh they wont be missed), he doesnt have the pace needed for a wide man but his intelligence in his play makes him a good attacking link with the front men and the general consensus is that he isnt careless in posession.
