I've been referred to a dental surgeon to have a tooth extracted due to decay below the gum line that has spread to the exterior of the tooth as far as the gum, the only viable option seems to be the remove the tooth, because its a 'problematic extraction' as the dentist described it, it needs to be done by a surgeon rather than a dentist.

I've been given the option of having it done under local anaesthetic or under sedation... and while I've had extractions done before, its been uncomfortable but bearable but this sounds like hell! Has anyone been to a dental surgeon under similar circumstances? And should I go for sedation and sleep through it rather than be awake for the event? Not comfortable with being out cold for such a procedure but not comfortable with seeing a guy with a pliers in my mouth pulling and tugging the damn tooth out either!
