Good article on Glenn's lad. That programme he is doing in Britain will be interesting

"It's good for him. He doesn't have to lie when girls come up to him. It's hard to have something inside you that's really big".

Top flight footballer? Fourth division in Sweden is hardly top flight I'd dare to say. I have played in the fifth division, which says it all....

If Glenn wasn't his dad then this probably would not have gotten so much attention, on the other hand he made good use of the fact that could gather that much attention to an important topic while being a pretty mediocre football player ;) Nonetheless a good article about the general state of football and the dogmas that surrounds it. Sadly I think it will be be some time until say a Premier League player announces he is gay. The term institutionally homophobic was a very fitting one I think.

They were discussing homosexuality in football on R5 after wossichops came out in the cricketing world (would look it up, but I'm trying to go home) - general consensus was that fellow players' reactions were less of a problem compared to the potential abuse that would rain down from the terraces

I think abuse of all kinds from the football terraces is tribal - whether its about Gary Nevilles mother from Liverpool fans, Manchester United fans building bonfires or West Ham fans singing about David Beckhams wife, things get said that most of those involved would not say to any individual on the street unless they were looking to get stoved in. The tribal mentality on a football terrace takes over and the abuse that spews forth is the result. Safety in numbers, the tribal mentality.

I dont think the same tribalism applies in Rugby or in Cricket where other players named in the articles above have come out and I doubt you'd get it in snooker or tennis either - has Martina Navratilova ever been subjected to the likes of it? I dont think so.

I remember seeing a video of John Barnes playing against Man Utd at Anfield from sometime in the late 80s and the noise level anytime he touched the ball was immediately evident, while racist abuse of that kind has largely disappeared from the game, certainly in England, it took a longish time to do so and only became totally unacceptable when both those within the game and wider society in general condemned it. For the likes of Hysen I think that the game is lagging miles behind society on this issue and despite it becoming more acceptable in society where actors, politicians, high ranking police officers and TV personalities are openly gay the battle for him will be much more difficult. Most people would say that it shouldnt be, but it will be until the tribalism of football is tamed by the more liberal thinking of mainstream society. I couldnt give a damn if a Liverpool player came out, the only criteria I'm interested in is can he play to the required level and meet the standard we expect from a Liverpool player. I doubt the oppositions fans would be as forgiving.
