Woodsyla Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 8pts behind City, top of the form guide, and both City and Spurs to come to Anfield. Spurs with the added distraction of Real Madrid, City with a HUGE cup game. I'd say it's definitely not off, it's MAYBE.
Falconhoof Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 whenever we do this we drop points in the next game. Lets go to Roy's Fortress West Brom and win.

As someone said one game at a time but we are effectively in the same position as Chelsea are points wise, difference we have is we are chasing two teams not one but we are chasing two teams who drop more points. In the last 6 games we have gained 5pts on City. Repeat that (and beating them will help) and Spurs have a blip (CL distraction) and we will be 3pts behind with 2 games left. Win those two and who knows? They still have to play each other as well. Edited March 21, 2011 by Woodsyla
Stupid Sexy Flanders Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Too few games for us to get 4th. Outside chance of 5th - that's all I reckon. Sadly I share this view. I've gotten my hopes up about forth place too many times this year.
goose island Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) to stand any chance we need 20+ points from the remaining fixtures (ideally the full 24 available). even then it's a slim possibility. edit - just looked at the fixtures, I can only see City dropping points against us and Spurs. 16 points from them fixtures (2 points a game) takes them to 69, which is the most we can get. we will more than likely drop points somewhere so 4th is too long gone. 5th is very possible with the fixtures Spurs have. let's hope they have an end of season burn-out! I was thinking this last night - Chelsea are suddenly considered as possible title contenders again yet we are closer to fourth than they are to 1st and we are "outsiders". Put like that it's but as you say, we need two teams to slip up. Oh, and so do Chelsea.....unless it's being considered as a given at this point that Arsenal will f*** up
Chili Palmer Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I don't think we can do it, but the run in has more significance for next season. Show Nesv that Kenny is the man and show Pepe that we have a strong future.

I can see City dropping loads of points. They dropped 10pts in their last 6 fixtures by the way yet you can only see them dropping 6 in 8 games? Show Nesv that Kenny is the man and show Pepe that we have a strong future.City are in a shocking run of form and we are playing them before their biggest game of the season. One eye on next week doesn't begin to describe it. I think City could easily blow it. Spurs is trickier, however they have two massive games against Real, they have to come to us, they have to play Arsenal and still have to go to City and Chelsea. If they can get past Madrid they could be undone by the sheer volume of fixtures. We are outsiders but we are not pissing in the wind even if we lose to Arsenal. I think 19pts and a win against both City and Spurs would be enough. to put it in context, we got 19 in our last 8 games and if we beat West Brom away next week we will have achieved the mythical 7 of 9 that was mentioned last year.

Everton have also be really inconsistent at home this season. we've also got to beat City at home first for this to mean anything. Edited March 21, 2011 by iwam russell
Chili Palmer Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Maddening isn't it. I don't think we can blame them, they are not only new to the premier league, they are new to football altogether. You have got to blame those who were advising them.

Stupid Sexy Flanders Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 apart from Wigan and West Ham of course. And just about beat Fulham. We're playing better but not great or consistent.
Sion Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 We'd have to win all 8 games. Come back to this thread if we've won the first 5.
Frosty Jack Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) There's always the possibility of a City Meltdown too, it'll become increasingly obvious that Mancini will be out the door. Much more likely they'll fall apart than Spurs in my opinion Edited March 21, 2011 by Wyndham Lewis
David Hodgson Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Too few games for us to get 4th. Outside chance of 5th - that's all I reckon. It's kind of 'in our hands' though. City lead us by 8 points and Spurs by about (effectively) 6 points. If we can beat both, and they both draw with each other, things look interesting. The gap over those two sets of games falls to 3 and 1 point respectively, with 7 games left to close. It's a big ask, but I felt if things went for us yesterday it was sort of 'on' again. Odds remain that we'll get 6th, but with just 9 games less a decent run would do it now. Edited March 21, 2011 by David Hodgson
Woodsyla Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 apart from Wigan and West Ham of course. We can afford two blips in 8 games in my view. If we beat Arsenal away we can afford to lose to someone else (as long as it's not City and Spuds). I'm not saying we will do it I'm saying we are in the race not just for 5th but for 4th.
Gilps Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 We've been doing really well under Kenny to be averaging 2 points a game, given the squad we've got available. Don't see much chance of us improving on that over the remaing 8 games, which we'd need to.

I think City might be running low on motivation and goals in the run in. A few looking elsewhere and past the manager perhaps, they've certainly picked a bad time to go off the boil, and the way they set up isn't really made for killing games early or easily.
