It's back and I wonder about whom he could be talking

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey says the Premier League's "bigger clubs" and their players disrespect referees and think they are "above the rules".

"Some players need to show more respect and restraint," said Moxey.

"The main culprits seem to be the so-called bigger clubs with the more high-profile players who appear to think they are, at times, above the rules."

Moxey called for players to be booked for disrespect and then sent off if they continued to harangue officials.

"It would probably result in two or three sendings off in some games, but players would quickly learn," added Moxey, who is one of the Premier League representatives on the Football Association's council.

"It's outrageous for a player to turn his back on a referee when he's being booked and for players to be 'ganging up' on officials," added Moxey.

"This behaviour is done with the intention of giving them an unfair advantage over the opposition. We've discussed this informally at Premier League and FA meetings and I would wholeheartedly support a much firmer approach."

Moxey did not name any clubs, but the performance of referees has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks.

In 2008, the FA launched a campaign entitled "Respect" - urging everyone involved in football, at all levels, to respect match officials.

However, in Scotland last November, top referees voted to strike in response to increasing criticism over their performance and integrity.

And in France last weekend, referees from the third division were brought in to officiate the day's Ligue 1 games after a row between the French Football Federation and the usual referees, who had wanted to delay the kick-offs in protest at recent criticism from players, coaches and pundits.
