Indeed. To end his career with that idiotic headbutt was so disappointing. Best player post-Maradona.

It was amazing, it was as if written by Camus, he was the Stranger.

Absolutely. I'm way more annoyed with him for appealing to the linesman to confirm his brilliant penno went over the line.

The best part is from about 2 mins to 2 mins 35.

Poor sod.

Is that just some rag-tag bunch of kids though?

Or is he just making them look like that?

I thought it was a great way to go out.

Materazzi had been goading him all game after a particularly rough encounter Zidane said sarcastically 'if you really want my shirt, you can have it later.' to which Materazzi has now admitted he said 'I'd prefer your whore of a sister'

Zidane flipped and gave him the best headbutt in a football game ever. It was like watching a a goat.

I love him even more for it.

:)

Of all the clips of Zidane on the net it's a bit strange to use that one as proof of his genius alright.

Agreed - it was even better than going out by scoring the winning goal. People forget winning goals sometimes. No one forgets a headbutt like that in a World Cup final!

Yes, because that's exactly what i was doing.

To let a d****ead like Materazzi get to you, ruin your last appearance and the chance to end your career by winning the biggest trophy of all for a 2nd time was nothing to be proud of. Sure, Materazzi is one person who deserves a headbutt, but he laughed last in all this. Zidane should have replied with a few choice words himself and Materazzi would have been the one heading for an early shower 2-3 mins later.

Zidane has been sent off more times in his career than vinny jones, so its not like that head butt was out of character

Materazzi knew exactly what he was doing

It didn't ruin his appearance for me, so that comment is subjective. Materazzi is only laughing because he won a World Cup. On the flip side everyone knows that he said 'I'd prefer your whore of a sister' as banter. Nice fella. Your suggestion that Materazzi would have done similar is again subjective. He does this week in week out for Inter, didn't Shevchenko get riled to the point of a headbutt once against Inter. Defenders know how to get under attackers skins, it's their job.

France didn't lose the World Cup because of Zidane, they lost it because they weren't the best side and they weren't the best penalty takers on the day.

The man is unblemished in my eyes. He won everything there was to be won and scored the goals in the biggest games for club and country. A genius.

Only won the World Cup? Well quite a laugh isn't it? As for the whore of a sister banter, that is pretty standard fare in most football games. Materazzi's plan worked and Zidane fell for it. Materazzi has on many occasions been sent off himself when provoked or irritated. Torres got him sent off pretty easily when we played Inter.

One cannot say that Zidane lost France the World Cup you say, but then go on to , rightly I may add, praise his outstanding skill and achievements. So would having that person on the field given France a better chance of winning the World Cup or not? As far as I remember he scored on the night in question and Buffon pulled off a superb save to deny him a 2nd goal. As for France not being the better team, it is not always the best team that wins.

It wasn't big and it wasn't clever but it was monumental, incredible theatre and a truly memorable event in the history of sport, the kind of thing that people will talk about for decades.

For what it's worth, I'm sure I recall pitch-side reports that Zidane had gone physically by that point and wanted to come off.

Yes it was. Also he should have technically not been sent off as ref and linesmen did not see the incident. Ref consulted with 4th official, which was not as per regulation. France had in fact, in vain of course, launched a protest as a result.

We will have to disagree on your definition of banter. Most of football thought Materazzi was a c*** befor the final. Everyone outside Italy does now.

Zidane was sent off with 10 mins of extra time remaining. The only thing he deprived France of was a penalty, in return we get one of the most memorable incidents in World Cup history. He didn't cost France a World Cup, they probably would have lost anyway.

It is pretty standard fare and anyone who has played been in or around the game will have heard that and worse. Same in other sports. That Materazzi is a despicable c*** is not an issue here. Yes he is, but it is a pity that a great player like Zidane let him get to him.

In 10 mins of extra-time a lot can happen. 6 minutes in Istanbul is a good example. Having Zidane ON the field for those 10mins is far better than not having him on it. Surely you'd agree with that.

Who scored in the 1974 WC final? I can't tell you off the top of my head.

I can tell you that Zidane headbutted a prick in one though.
