Chili Palmer Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 (edited) I know the purists out there appreciate him, but I'm not getting it, yes he keeps it simple and keeps the ball moving but the lack of pace or decisive passing stands out like a sore thumb. Not my cup of tea. like students. Edited February 18, 2011 by Chili Palmer

Thought he was excellent before Christmas though, on current form he shouldn't be involved and I'm not sure that him and Kuyt in the same XI ever really works.
muleskinner Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 At a rumoured 90k a week he'll be moving on in the Summer I'm fairly sure. Shame we didn't have him 3 years sooner.

I have to admit to not seeing him much before he came, the odd At Madrid game and Argentina one, has he lost pace or was he never the quickest?

He was never the quickest but he had a bad injury and it seemed to have slowed him up whe he got fit again. He's a decent player but he isn't going to be getting any better or quicker and we need pace out wide, lots of it.

Thought he was excellent before Christmas though, on current form he shouldn't be involved and I'm not sure that him and Kuyt in the same XI ever really works. Definitely agree with this. He's a good player to have when the team is playing well, not so much when we are not. He's good a marked improvement to make if he is to stay involved next season, can see him in the team if we play the 5-4-1 formation Kenny seem's to be favouring, or Kuyt for that matter: Lucas Merieles Gerrard Suarez Carroll
D.Boon Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 He'll do for the bench but needs improving on for the starting 11.
Rimbeux Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 (edited) He'll do for the bench but needs improving on for the starting 11. Thing is he's not an impact player to my mind and his level of performance swings hugely, averaging out at about ok, so you cant even be sure of 7/10 when you put him on. Personal opinion is that at his age, on his pay, he should be bringing much more, and keeping him as a reserve only holds blocks younger players. It would be nice he could suddenly discover some composure in front of goal as well. Edited February 18, 2011 by Rimbeux
Conrad Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 what does he do exactly? He's a waste of space.

He can cover a few positions which is valuable for squad cover. I don't see too many youngsters being held back.
richwilks Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Maxi is better with better players around him. He's technically excellent but he has no pace at all any more and if players around him aren't performing he won't perform. He's one to be moved on in the summer, good player but he's easily improved on.
Mr S Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 what does he do exactly? He's a waste of space. You're spot on with this question. He doesn't really do anything wrong. He can pass the ball, can even move it forward. But at the end of the day what he does, doesn't actually progress us. He needs to be beating players, taking the ball to the byeline, putting in crosses and so on. And yes, he did look much better before Christmas but seems to have shrunk back into his shell again. At his age the only solution is the exit door I'm afraid Great shame. I had expected so much more.

I don't see too many youngsters being held back.On being cover, it's the inconsistency that gets me, you cant rely on him, not the sort of player you can stick on and know you are going to get an adequate level from. With the younger players, it's the ones who will come to the club as well as those we might be seeing more of. I'd ship him in the summer.

I thought he came to life a bit last year when Aquilani started getting a game and the two of them could link in quite nicely. Good player but yeah, there must be better out there.
McBain Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Maxi, Kuyt, N'Gog, Konchesky, Skrtel, Jovanovic and Poulsen can all happily go in the summer
Gunga Din Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 i've never really seen it with him. he's like Kuyt without the workrate, but better techincally
The_Adder Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Maxi, Kuyt, N'Gog, Konchesky, Skrtel, Jovanovic and Poulsen can all happily go in the summer Completely agreed. i've never really seen it with him. he's like Kuyt without the workrate, but better techincally Good summary - about the same levels of impact
D.Boon Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Maxi is better with better players around him. I'd ship him in the summer. I have no problem with him leaving, i just think our squad is so poor that we may need to hang on to him for another season or so.
Gunga Din Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I have no problem with him leaving, i just think our squad is so poor that we may need to hang on to him for another season or so. i think you will see our squad get a complete over haul in the summer. i'm hopeful the days of sell one buy one are gone. we need to spend money to improve all over the park to challenge for trophies. we have the manager to do it, now we need the team and squad, and i think you will see 2 or 3 seasons worth of signins all arrive in the summer. next years team will hopefully contain a few more players, and players of a better quality and with a bit more pace than some of the ones we have at the minute
Rimbeux Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I have no problem with him leaving, i just think our squad is so poor that we may need to hang on to him for another season or so. It's either him or Joe Cole, ideally both, to be replaced. One will be easier to shift than the other imo. We dont lack numbers in the two or three positions he covers, they are just mainly the wrong players and changing one for one in that pool would be absolutely fine.
Dan Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 i've never really seen it with him. he's like Kuyt without the workrate, but better techincally So he's not like Kuyt then?
Leo No.8 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 (edited) We haven't got a single wide player with pace - that is a massive glaring issue that has to be addressed in the summer; the one we had wasn't good enough and now even he's been sold. I like Maxi, but he is in a spell of poor form which is surprising as I thought he'd suit Kenny's style of play very well. I prefer him as a wide player to Kuyt because usually his use of the ball is so much better and he helps retain the ball with his intelligent movement and distribution. But lately he has been giving it away cheaply too often, which means he's of very little use as he doesn't have any pace to stretch the opposition. Having said all this of all our wide options I would keep Maxi in the summer (if his wages can be reduced a bit perhaps), consider Kuyt primarily as a striker with Suarez and Carroll, sell Cole purely because he can't stay fit (I do still like him as a player but where's the point if he's injured all the time?) and bring in two wingers with pace. I think Maxi would seem much more effective in a quicker side, as he can link and bring others into play very well. I agree he has been poor lately, but I still think he is a good player out of form. richwilks Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 We haven't got a single wide player with pace I think Suarez will play a wider role and we'll bring someone in on the other side, Hazard would be ideal.
Dan Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I think Suarez will play a wider role and we'll bring someone in on the other side, Hazard would be ideal. I think Hazard will end up playing through the middle
Hassony Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 So he's not like Kuyt then?Kuyt is a lot better
