Suarez, first impressions...

Going on Saturday's evidence, he's quicker than I was expecting. Worked the channels very well and wasn't afraid to take a deeper or wider position to keep himself involved. Will be harder for the average 'clogger' centre back to keep tabs on (compared to Torres), without the risk of being isolated out wide or deep one on one. He was involved in everything that was good about a fairly average performance, so I can imagine better all round performances will result in him reaping all sorts of rewards.

Think the guy can be a huge player for us and I was genuinely delighted at the first viewing in a Liverpool shirt.

There's a good compilation of his Wigan touches on YouTube, worth a viewing.

The shape of his ears worry me, thats about it. He is going to be immense for us when he has better players round him. (normal shaped ear players that is)

First touch is outstanding and positive, not just looking for control, but to make something happen with this ability to take the ball and turn in one movement. He's going to get a lot of free kicks, he's going to link well with Gerrard and is going to make those around him look better players.

Yes, link-up play was far and away better from what we're used to. Reminded me of a fit, fast Robbie Fowler. Good first touch and very alert.

will be interesting to see how he plays with Carroll, I hope that it won't turn into your typical big man/ little man combination

Yeah, that is what I was thinking as well but was almost too afraid to say it because that is some f***ing player we've got if it is an accurate comparison!

Seems to be quite similar to Tevez. Always on the move and looking for space, good on the ball as well.

Very similar to Tevez. Which is good.

Me too. Not sure whow its gonna work to be honest. I think Suarez looks like a proper number 7 who would benefit more from playing with a quicker number 9. But we shall see

I think they may suit well and not just for the obvious big/little combination reason.

For me Suarez does most of his work outside the box, so its ideal for him to have a player holding a more central position as a target man (or a 'point of reference if you will :)).

I think Carroll is too mobile than to be stuck with the big man tag. He can play too. The link play will be interesting between himself, Suarez and Gerrard. There's a few goals in that trio.

understand that concern gibo. think it depends a bit on how we intend to use carroll, or even just how the rest of the team react to having a target up top. what i will say about carroll, and what makes him a slightly different proposition to a zigic or a crouch or even a big kev, is that he's not a slouch. i think he can threaten in behind. which is why, regardless of how he plays, he'll force opposition defences backwards, which can only be a good thing. up to us to use the ball well from there. don't think he's the best striker out there ability wise at this point, but he might be near the top of the ones defenders really don't want to face.

sure suarez with his ability to drop off or drift wide will be able to find space in those scenarios.

I think Suarez will score more. Carroll will attract two defenders and create a lot of space and it will be almost impossible to pick Suarez up, I can see him playing havoc getting in between fullbacks and centre halves. Carroll has decent enough pace though and I think he will improve a lot playing with Suarez and Gerrard. Clearly we need a wide man getting crosses in for Carroll and carrying the ball as an outlet, I think Ashley Young would be ideal.

Oh and Maxi, keep the f*** away from free kicks!

Couldn't believe he stepped up to take that. Even a cursory glance at youtube tells you how good Suarez is from dead balls. It was in a perfect spot for him as well.

I'm a big fan of Maxi but he has been in terrible form lately - strangely as everyone else seems to have improved he's gone backwards and you'd think he'd fit Kenny's new style perfectly.

His use of the ball has always been so good before, but he's been careless and wasteful of late. Just think its a spell of poor form though, I'd still play him ahead of Kuyt with everybody fit if you're saying Carroll and Suarez up front, Stevie playing from the right and one space to fill on the left. Love Dirk but based on this season he'd be on the bench with everyone fit for me, although every manager he has at club and international level seems to consider him essential.

If Kenny is going to go with wing backs, is there any need for wingers?

This is such a crucial element and what separates good players from top players. We have too many, Maxi, Kuyt, Aurelio, who are decent to good players, but really need to be surrounded by better players to lift their game and shine. There aren't really ones we can rely on when the team isn't playing well.

If you look at barca, their entire midfield and attacking lineup is composed of players who make the players around them look better players. Synergies all over the pitch.

It would be nice to be able to play both though - as it stands we're going to really struggle with the wide areas in any game we don't play 3 at the back. We really, really need a quick winger desperately. Young would be perfect for changes in formation as he is versatile, you could probably fit him into Maxi's role in the Chelsea game for example. I'd absolutely love us to sign Young, I think he'd be a revelation here - it'd be a perfect move for him and for us as he'd be a regular first team player with better players around him.

I'm not sure 3 at the back is going to be a week in week out thing, but more of a change from time to time and specific situations so we need players who can be versatile and Young is. He would be my single number one target for the summer if you take his contract situation into account and the effect that could have on his value and availability. Young and a top, top centre half and we'd be back in challenging for the CL spots already even without shipping a few out and using that money to improve other areas.

Is he? Two games out of eight so far with wing backs, six with a flat back four?

Options it seems, my hunch is the three at the back is a symptom of lack of forwards and wide players rather than a blueprint. If you look at it, there are very few options for width in the squad.

Agree and he said so himself, was best use of available players, however it worked so well you can see it being persisted with.

Definately need a new LB in the summer and watching Enrique at Newcastle this year has improved massively, and his crossing is very good and consistent. Nice to see him linked today.
